Offer Description
The Microbial Ecology Group at the Institute of Environmental Sciences, Faculty of Biology, Jagiellonian University in Kraków seeks a highly motivated Postdoctoral Researcher to contribute to exciting research on cellular dormancy (quiescence) in eukaryotic microorganisms, particularly baker's yeast (Saccharomyces cerevisiae). This project explores cellular and molecular mechanisms underlying phenotypic variability in quiescent cell populations and their impact on adaptation, antifungal resistance, and population dynamics. The successful candidate will lead the implementation, development and application of single-cell analysis methods to investigate quiescence at individual cell and population levels.

Skills/Qualifications
The position covers setting up and running a single-cell imaging laboratory and integrating single-cell data with population-level data. Duties include:

- holding at least a doctoral degree;
- having relevant scientific achievements;
- taking active part in scientific life;
Specific Requirements
- Compliance with the NCN requirement for persons employed as post-docs, i.e. obtaining a PhD degree in the year of employment in the project or in the period of 7 years prior to 1 January of the year of employment in the project and other documents specified in the Annex to NCN Council Resolution No 23/2024 of 4 March 2024, https://www.ncn.gov.pl/sites/default/files/pliki/uchwaly-rady/2024/uchwala23_2024-zal1.pdf#page=45.
- A doctoral degree in biology, biotechnology, bioinformatics or a related field, obtained in the year of employment in the project or in the period of 7 years prior to January 1 of the year of employment in the project.
- Very good command of English (spoken and written), enabling scientific communication and publication.
- Documented scientific achievements (preferably publications in peer-reviewed journals).
- Strong analytical skills and ability to work independently in an interdisciplinary team. (preferably evidenced by awards and individually awarded research grants).
- Project data stewardship / data curation: organisation, quality control, documentation and archiving of data in line with FAIR principles and the data-management plan.
- Advanced statistical analyses, basic programming skills, working knowledge of R.
- Willingness to implement and further develop single-cell imaging techniques in the Microbial Ecology Group.
- AI-assisted analysis of microscopy images.
- Interest and experience in studying resting/dormant states and metabolic activity of miroorganisma, supported by research achievements: personal projects, publications, etc.
- Willingness to undertake internships abroad, in order to raise qualifications and subsequently implement the acquired methods in the home laboratory.

Eligibility criteria
Required: PhD in Biological sciences/Microbiology/Biochemistry/Biophisics obtained ≤7 years ago; documented scientific achievements (2-3+ peer-reviewed publications); active scientific participation; 2-3+ years microscopy/single-cell analysis experience; NCN compliance; Jagiellonian University as primary workplace; good English proficiency (speaking/writing); willingness to mentor students and collaborate internationally.
Selection process
The first stage of the selection procedure is the formal assessment of the submitted documents. Applications which meet all formal requirements are the subject of substantive assessment, during which an interview with the Candidate (F/M) may be conducted (directly or via electronic communication channels), upon settling the date of the interview with the Candidate (F/M). During the interview, the soft competencies indicated in the announcement will also be verified. The Candidate has the right to appeal against the negative assessment by the selection board within 7 days from receiving the information about the results of the assessment.
