Assistant Professor - Scholarly Communication Librarian

As a member of the Information Services and Studies Department, the Scholarly Communication Librarian will coordinate the management of the institutional repository and develop and deliver an active outreach program. The target audience for this program is Georgia College faculty and students. Reporting to the Associate Director for Information Studies, the Scholarly Communication Librarian serves as the primary spokesperson for issues and policies relating to scholarly communication, including drafting and reviewing policies and guidelines for the institutional repository; analyzing copyright status and risk for digital-related publishing projects; and assisting faculty to review contracts and license agreements.

All library faculty contribute to the core curriculum (GC1Y) and the library's Information Studies minor, including no more than two courses per academic year. Library faculty also deliver non-credit information literacy instruction to students individually and in groups, and serve as internship site supervisors and supervise practicum students as needed.

Faculty are expected to conduct research and develop within the profession. Academic Achievement/Professional Development - Publications (editing, citations); Presentations at professional meetings; Publication; peer reviewed scholarship; Current work in circulation or in progress; Grants received or applied for; Membership and participation in professional organizations; Other professional service of development activities. Ability to develop and demonstrate knowledge of current philosophies, practices, and theories related to the academic discipline.

All faculty are expected to support the advancement of the department, college and university mission by providing service to the institution. Service may be at the department, college, university, community and disciplinary level. Duties include service on college-level and university-level committees, advising students regarding career options, and support of department-level outreach activities. Service to the Institution - Committee memberships and offices; Programs directed and advised; Participation in special programs or projects; Other service in the institution. Ability to work collegially with others in service to the University; Support the advancement of the department, college and University mission.

Public Service is often a part of faculty service expectations and might include activities such as the following: Consulting work; Provide continuing education service, instruction, or program development for department, school, college, or university; Membership and participation in community organizations; Other significant services to the community. Ability to work collegially with others in service to the broader University community.

USG supports Freedom of Expression as stated in Board Policy 6.5.

ALA accredited Masters degree in library and information science. Must meet SACSCOC accreditation requirements stated in C.S. 3.7.1 (www.sacscoc.org (faculty credentials)). Knowledge of technologies and systems germane to the 21st century library, and issues surrounding scholarly communications across a variety of disciplines; Demonstrated exceptional written and oral communication skills; ability to present complex information to various user groups, such as faculty, staff, and students. Two years of public services (e.g., reference, instruction) experience in an academic library. One year of experience using an institutional repository system. One year of experience developing and maintaining web-based information guides and instructional materials; a strong public service orientation. Copyright training and/or certification (e.g., Creative Commons, CopyrightX). Two years of administrative experience with bepress Digital Commons. One year of administrative experience with bepress PURE. One year of experience teaching for-credit courses. Knowledge and experience in copyright law as it relates to fair use and library exceptions, emerging scholarly communication modes, open access, authors' rights, and scholarly use of intellectual property.
