West Virginia University

The School of Social Work at West Virginia University invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track appointment in Social Work at the Assistant Professor rank. The preferred start date is August, 2026.

The WVU School of Social Work is accredited by the Council on Social Work Education and enrolls approximately 350 students at the BSW and MSW levels. Both the BSW and the MSW programs are offered on-campus and online. The MSW program specialization is Advanced Integrated Practice, with a focus on interdisciplinary work. Responsibilities:

The successful candidate will contribute to both the research and teaching missions of the Department. The applicant is expected to establish an externally funded, nationally competitive research program in the area of Social Work.

The typical teaching load is four courses per year. The successful candidate is expected to teach classes at the undergraduate and graduate levels. Teaching responsibilities will normally include courses at the BSW, MSW, and/or PhD levels and mentorship of doctoral students. The candidate will also be expected to serve the community, university, and profession.

Qualifications

Professional Qualifications:

The successful candidate must have: 1) a doctoral degree in Social Work or a related field (late-stage ABD applicants will be considered; completion of the doctoral degree by hire date is required); 2) a CSWE-accredited master's degree in social work; 3) evidence of strong potential for outstanding contribution to the School's undergraduate and graduate teaching and research missions; 4) two years post-MSW professional practice experience; 5) evidence of a productive, fundable research program; 6) excellent written and oral communication skills.

Application:

To apply, please visit https://careers.wvu.edu/career-opportunities and upload in a single PDF document: (1) a letter of interest describing your interest in the position, your research agenda, and your teaching experience and qualifications; (2) a curriculum vitae including a complete list of publications and relevant teaching experience; (3) names and contact information for three references. Review of applications will begin on 11/17/25 and will continue until the position is filled. For additional information please contact Dr. Mary Christensen (mary.christensen@mail.wvu.edu).
