Assistant Professor, Social Work (2794)

The Department of Sociology, Social Work, and Criminology at Idaho State University invites applications for a tenure-track position in Social Work beginning August 2026. We seek applicants who can teach core and elective courses within the MSW curriculum. We are open to a variety of research interests for this position, as well as a variety of theoretical and methodological approaches. However, we are especially interested in applicants whose research focus is on rural social work and mental health. Teaching duties for this position are a 3/3 load and include in-class, broadcast (synchronous online), and online (asynchronous) formats. While we are open to a variety of teaching foci, we are particularly interested in candidates who can teach research-oriented classes. The successful candidate will be expected to grow and maintain an active research program, including publishing in scholarly journals and submitting grant proposals, and to fill service roles in the department, college, university, and community. The hired candidate will be based at Idaho State University's Pocatello campus.

Who we are: The department of Sociology, Social Work, and Criminology is housed within the College of Arts and Letters. As a college, we pride ourselves on being a community of scholars who make meaningful, professional contributions to our disciplines, departments, university, and community. This includes being passionate about providing outstanding learning opportunities for our students, many of whom are first-generation college students from Idaho. We also pride ourselves on our commitment to working supportively and collaboratively with other members of the department to achieve university goals to meet our collective mission. Our goal in the College of Arts and Letters is to work together in putting students first, and we expect all our faculty to embrace this core value.

The four programs in the department - Sociology, Criminology, Social Work, and Gender and Sexuality Studies - are all interconnected and support a dynamic community of collaborative teaching, research, and service. Faculty in the department use a wide variety of methods and approaches to contribute to many areas of research and learning, including the community and environment, child welfare, mental health, sexual diversity, and forensic social work.

  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Evidence for potential excellence in teaching in a variety of formats, including synchronous and asynchronous online classes.
