The University of Victoria School of Social Work, within the Faculty of Health, invites applications for a tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor, to commence July 1, 2027, or as negotiated.  

Salary Range   

The candidate's qualifications, experience and overall market demand will determine a candidate’s final salary offer. The salary for this position includes a competitive salary range of $116,000 - $141,000 UVic is committed to offering an equitable and competitive salary, inclusive of a generous benefits package, eligible leaves and pension plan.   

The School of Social Work offers an undergraduate (BSW) program and graduate programs (MSWF  

(Foundation), MSWA (Advanced), and MSWI (Indigenous), all of which emphasize social justice, Indigenous and anti-oppressive approaches to working with communities, families, and individuals. All our programs are fully accredited by the Canadian Association for Social Work Education.   

The School, including students, staff, sessional instructors and faculty members, is committed to decolonizing, anti-racist, and anti-oppressive work in our leadership and pedagogies, in our research and education.  Our goals are to establish learning opportunities in a supportive on-campus and online environment that promote equity, respect, responsibility, curiosity, collaboration, risk-taking and creativity.  As a School, we apply a decolonial equity framework that includes an intersectional lens in all that we do academically and administratively.

In accordance with the University’s Equity Plan and pursuant to section 42 of the BC Human Rights Code, the selection will be limited to members of the following designated group: Indigenous Peoples.  Our search committee will review the pool of applications from those who self-identify as Indigenous. Candidates from this group must self-identify in their cover letter to be considered for this position.  

The Office of the Vice-President Indigenous (OVPI) has introduced the Indigenous Citizenship Declaration (ICD) Policy (GV0810) to affirm declarations of Indigenous citizenship, membership and belonging where these claims result in material advantages, such as employment in an Indigenous-specific position. Shortlisted candidates for Faculty and Librarian positions designated for Indigenous Peoples through Preferential and Limited Hiring Programs (HR6110) will be required to provide a Declaration and Supporting Information in accordance with the ICD Policy.

provide a declaration through the ICD Application Portal (ICDPortal.uvic.ca). Those shortlisted candidates who meet the requirements established by the ICD Policy will proceed through the hiring process.

The successful candidate will be expected to teach in the graduate and undergraduate programs (both online and on-campus delivery modalities), supervise graduate students, conduct research and participate in the administrative structure of the school. We seek applicants who demonstrate a commitment to decolonization in their teaching, research and community activism. Areas  

of research and teaching that are of particular interest to the School include, but are not limited to, the following: transnationalism; critical disability studies; poverty; queer theory; environmental justice; Mad studies; health and racial equity; and Indigenous pedagogy. Applicants are asked to clearly indicate their area of scholarship and its contribution to social work education.  

The School welcomes applications from qualified candidates who:  

  • hold a PhD or are ABD (All But Dissertation) with at least one Social Work degree;  

  • have 5 or more years of social work practice experience post BSW or MSW degree; or have 3 years of social work practice post BSW or MSW degree with relevant lived experience;  

  • demonstrate knowledge and experience of decolonial equity and intersectionality in practice, pedagogy and epistemology;   

  • have experience and knowledge of teaching undergraduate and/or graduate programs;  

  • bring an emerging program of research and scholarship commensurate with the Assistant Professor level;   

  • can articulate how their pedagogical approach supports the School’s vision and mission;   

  • have experience with face-to-face and online/distance education  

  • are committed to work collaboratively and transparently within the School to meet overall School objectives.

  • a covering letter that addresses the full scope of the job requirements, along with:  a statement on teaching philosophy and teaching interests with specific reference to how your practice experience informs your pedagogy; and how you have implemented social justice in your practice;  

  • 2-3 samples of teaching materials you have produced, e.g. podcasts, handouts, 1-2 course syllabi you have designed;  

  • evaluations of teaching from the latest courses taught;  

  • appropriate evidence of research (2-5 research publications and/or work in progress)
