Assistant Professor

Position Description: The Physics Department at the New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology (New Mexico Tech) invites applications for a 9 month tenure-track Assistant Professor of Physics to start in Fall semester of 2026. We specifically seek candidates to complement our astrophysics program. Broader areas of interest include: radioastronomy, stellar formation and evolution, galactic astronomy, planetary atmospheres, exoplanets, observational techniques and scientific computing. We encourage applicants that can develop strong connections with the National Radio Astronomy Observatory (NRAO), Sandia and Los Alamos National Laboratories. A Ph.D. in physics, astrophysical science or related fields is required.

Responsibilities: (a) teaching undergraduate (e.g., introductory, upper-division, service courses) and graduate courses in the department, related fields, and their areas of expertise; (b) establishing a vibrant research program that is supported by external funding; (c) serving as an academic and research advisor for undergraduate and graduate students; (d) contributing to the department's and institution's efforts in supporting student academic success while engaging and encouraging students from diverse academic, socioeconomic, and cultural backgrounds; and (e) assisting in department, center, and university activities that include assessment and accreditation and other service activities in the profession and community.

Department Description: The physics department has 14 full-time tenured and tenure track faculty; we offer undergraduate specializations in astrophysics and atmospheric physics, as well as robust research and graduate degrees in those areas and in physics instrumentation. Our department values excellence in attentive instruction and expects a successful candidate with great enthusiasm for mentoring and teaching. The candidate should also help us to attract more majors at both the undergraduate and graduate level. Our department is known for extensively involving undergraduates in sponsored research programs. The department has affiliations with the National Radio Astronomy Observatory, the Magdalena Ridge Observatory, and the Langmuir Laboratory for Atmospheric Research. For additional information please see the department's web page at http://www.nmt.edu/academics/physics or contact the department chair Raúl Morales-Juberías at raul.moralesjuberias@nmt.edu

Institute Description: The NMT campus is small and collegial with roughly 1,100 undergraduates and 500 graduate students in science and engineering. The full-time faculty percentage at NMT is 78% which is higher than the national average. The student to faculty ratio is 10 to 1 which is lower than the national average. NMT sends a higher fraction of its students on to graduate work than almost all other public institutions in the US. NMT is a federally-designated Hispanic Serving Institution, and roughly 1/3 of our faculty and majors are female.

Application Details: For full consideration please apply by December 1, 2025. We anticipate closure of the application period on January 15, 2026. Applicants should submit in a single pdf document the following: a one page cover letter, a curriculum vitae including the names of 3 potential references, a statement describing teaching experience and/or philosophy (up to 3 pages), and a research statement describing background experience and future plans (up to 3 pages). Applications should be sent to nmtjobapps@npe.nmt.edu and also copied to: Van Romero (van.romero@nmt.edu), Raúl Morales-Juberías (raul.moralesjuberias@nmt.edu), and Steve Simpson (Steve.Simpson@nmt.edu)

Equal Employment Opportunity: NMT is committed to creating a community in which a diverse population can learn, live, and work in an atmosphere of tolerance, civility, and respect for the rights and sensibilities of each individual. NMT is an Equal Opportunity Employer. Benefits: Health, vision, dental, tuition fee waiver, and a generous retirement plan.

Regional Attractions: NMT is located in Socorro, which is a town of about 9,000 people located in the scenic Rio Grande River Valley of central New Mexico, 1 hour south of Albuquerque and its many attractions, and 2 hours south of Santa Fe. Nearby mountains and desert canyons provide opportunities for excellent hiking, climbing, and mountain biking. The Bosque del Apache National Wildlife Refuge, located just south of Socorro along a major north-south flyway, offers some of the best birding in the USA.
