Assistant Professor (Teaching) in Geographic Information Science

Description
Located in Calgary, on the traditional territories of the people of the Treaty 7 region in Southern Alberta, the Department of Geography in the Faculty of Arts at the University of Calgary is pleased to invite applications for a tenure track faculty position at the rank of Assistant Professor (Teaching) in Geographic Information Science. The anticipated start date is July 1, 2026, or a mutually agreed upon date.

Position Description
The successful candidate will engage in the teaching and service duties of faculty members in the Department, while maintaining an inclusive, equitable, and collegial work environment across such activities. The candidate will primarily contribute to our undergraduate (BA, BSc) programs in Geography including the Embedded Certificate in GIS, as well as the Master of GIS (MGIS) and Graduate Certificate in Geospatial Technologies (CGIT) programs. In addition, the incumbent will also be involved in extra-curricular events and mentorship in the department and broader community with the goal to sustain these vibrant programs, as evidenced by mentorship, community engagement, and/ or industry experience.

We are seeking an individual capable of teaching a wide variety of geospatial courses, including GIS, Remote Sensing, spatial stats, urban GIS, and project management. Ability to integrate programming, GeoAI, or machine learning into the curriculum is an asset. Individuals should be willing and capable of teaching in both synchronous (in-person) and hybrid formats. Applicants should hold a doctoral degree or be near completion of a doctoral program in geography or a closely related field by the appointment date. In addition, an ideal candidate should demonstrate evidence of teaching excellence by presenting an outstanding record of teaching effectiveness, evidence of pedagogical innovation, experience with developing undergraduate/graduate curricula, and advising of students.

The typical teaching load for an Assistant Professor (Teaching) is seven, three-credit (one term) course equivalents per year. Credit will be given toward course load when the instructor is also teaching the laboratory sections.
