Assistant Professor (Teaching) in Real Estate
Haskayne School of Business (HSB), University of Calgary, invites applications for a 2-year contingent-term position at the rank of Assistant Professor (Teaching) to teach courses in Real Estate. The intended appointment start date is July 1, 2026 but is negotiable.
This position is an academic appointment within the Haskayne School of Business, contributing to Real Estate Studies through the Westman Centre for Real Estate Studies. The successful candidate will hold their appointment within an academic unit in the School and will report to the appropriate Area Chair. The role is designed to support and enhance teaching and program development in Real Estate Studies at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. The successful candidate will contribute to the delivery of core courses and play a key role in strengthening and evolving the School's real estate curriculum in alignment with industry needs and student demand.
The role also includes serving as Academic Director of the Westman Centre for Real Estate Studies, providing academic leadership to support the integrity, coordination, and continued development of the program.
The position requires evidence of teaching effectiveness and a strong commitment to high quality, practice-relevant education. The successful candidate will demonstrate the ability to translate industry knowledge into engaging learning experiences, contribute to curriculum development, and participate in service activities that support program growth and student success.
We invite applications from candidates with expertise in one or more areas of real estate, including development, investment, valuation, brokerage, property/asset management, entrepreneurship, law, and/or construction.
We expect candidates for the position to meet the following:
- A graduate-level degree in a relevant field (e.g., MBA or equivalent required; a doctoral degree is considered an asset);
- Significant professional experience in the real estate industry, with demonstrated currency and relevance of expertise;
- Evidence of effective teaching at the post-secondary level, or strong potential for teaching excellence;
- The ability to teach core real estate courses at the undergraduate and graduate levels, particularly introductory and foundational offerings;
- A collegial and collaborative approach, with the ability to work effectively with academic colleagues and industry instructors;
- Professional designations (e.g., CFA or relevant real estate credentials) are considered an asset.
Expected duties include:
- Teaching undergraduate and graduate courses in Real Estate Studies, including core and elective offerings, in a variety of formats (e.g., daytime and evening delivery);
- Contributing to the design, development, and continuous improvement of real estate curriculum, including enhancing existing courses and supporting new program initiatives;
- Providing academic leadership as Academic Director of the Westman Centre for Real Estate Studies, including:
- Supporting curriculum oversight and alignment across undergraduate and graduate offerings;
- Contributing to program development and growth;
- Supporting and engaging sessional instructors and fostering a strong teaching community;
- Engaging in service activities within the Haskayne School of Business, with a focus on program development, student experience, and community engagement;
- Maintaining strong connections with the real estate industry to ensure program relevance and experiential learning opportunities for students.
