About the School of Kinesiology

The School of Kinesiology is part of UBC’s Faculty of Education and is a leader in kinesiology research and teaching. The School offers a wide range of undergraduate and graduate programs in kinesiology, including a Bachelor of Kinesiology, Master’s, and Ph.D. programs. The School emphasizes interdisciplinary research excellence, especially in areas such as neuromechanical kinesiology, clinical biomechanics, and sports and exercise biomechanics.

Position Summary

The School of Kinesiology at UBC invites applications for a full-time tenure-track (Assistant Professor) or tenured (Associate Professor) position in Biomechanics of Human Movement. The successful candidate will contribute to both basic and applied research in human biomechanics and will be expected to teach undergraduate and graduate courses in biomechanics. The appointment is expected to start on January 1, 2026, or as mutually agreed upon.

The candidate will conduct research in biomechanics, with a focus on neuromechanical kinesiology, and contribute to teaching courses in biomechanics and related applied fields, such as injury biomechanics, occupational biomechanics, and sports biomechanics.

Key Responsibilities

  1. Research:
  • Develop and lead a research program in human biomechanics, with a focus on 3D kinematics, kinetics, and dynamics of human movement.
  • Seek and secure competitive research funding (e.g., tri-council and partnership grants).
  • Publish research findings in peer-reviewed academic journals and present at national and international conferences.
  • Engage in applied biomechanics research, particularly in areas such as injury biomechanics and occupational biomechanics.
  1. Teaching & Mentorship:
  • Teach undergraduate courses in biomechanics and develop advanced applied biomechanics courses (e.g., injury biomechanics, sports biomechanics, clinical biomechanics, etc.).
  • Mentor and supervise graduate students and support the development of their academic and research careers.
  • Develop and deliver a five-year research plan in the area of biomechanics.
  1. Service & Collaboration:
  • Collaborate with faculty and researchers within the School of Kinesiology and across UBC Faculties.
  • Contribute to the School’s strategic initiatives for interdisciplinary research.
  • Participate in the Balance and Falls Research Centre and other related research programs.

Qualifications

The successful candidate will have:

  • A PhD in Kinesiology or a related field (e.g., Sport Science, Mechanical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering).
  • Expertise in human biomechanics, with advanced knowledge of 3D kinematics, kinetics, and dynamics of human movement.
  • Post-doctoral training in human biomechanics is highly preferred.
  • A strong record of research dissemination, including:
  • Publications in peer-reviewed journals.
  • Presentations at national and international conferences.
  • Demonstrated potential (Assistant Professor) or established success (Associate Professor) in securing competitive research funding (e.g., tri-council grants, industry partnerships).
  • Evidence of successful teaching experience at the undergraduate and graduate levels, including mentorship and supervision of graduate students.
  • Research experience in electromyography, tissue mechanics, wearable sensing, modelling, or similar areas is highly preferred.

Appointment & Salary

  • Position Type:
  • Assistant Professor (Tenure-Track) or Associate Professor (Tenured) in the Professoriate stream.
  • Salary Range:
  • Assistant Professor (Tenure-Track): $150,000 – $165,000 CAD per annum.
