Assistant Professor, Tenure-Track Teaching-Intensive - Cross-appointment in French Studies and Teacher Education (Junior/Intermediate/Senior French)

About the Position

This is a cross-appointment in the Department of Educational Studies (Faculty of Education) and the Department of Modern Languages, Literatures and Cultures (MLLC) (Faculty of Humanities). The successful candidate will be expected to teach half of their course load (1.5 full course equivalents (FCE)) in each department with service contributions to both departments.

In the Faculty of Education, the successful candidate will be responsible for coordinating and teaching courses in French teacher education (Junior/Intermediate and Intermediate/Senior) at both campuses. In French Studies (MLLC), the successful candidate will be responsible for coordinating and teaching one and a half sections (1.5 FCE) of FREN 1F90: French III at the St. Catharines campus.

The appointment will commence July 1, 2026.

Qualifications

The successful candidate will have native or near native proficiency in both written and spoken French and hold a doctorate in Educational Studies or French. Doctoral candidates who are ABD may be considered. Experience with or a familiarity with French education in Ontario schools including the Immersion, Extended and FSL curriculums and teaching French at the J/I and I/S level is essential. Experience teaching at the post-secondary level is required, including intermediate/upper level French language courses. Assets include: an Ontario College of Teachers’ (OCT) certification or equivalent, experience as a curriculum leader and/or school administrator, and experience in coordinating multi-section courses at the university level.

Preferred candidates will have: (1) experience in university teaching and curriculum development in face-to-face and blended learning environments, particularly in French education pedagogy; (2) experience teaching French language courses at the university level; (3) experience teaching in elementary and/or secondary schools; (4) experience coordinating multi-section university level language courses; (5) evidence of strong connections with French Education and Francophone organizations, both provincial and local, as well as local school boards; and (6) leadership experience. The successful candidate will demonstrate a commitment to decolonization, reconciliation, anti-racism, and social and ecological justice issues in teaching, research, and service.

The target hiring range for this position is $100,000 to $120,000. The final salary will be determined based on relevant experience, internal equity and budget considerations.
