Assistant Professors - Ecological Consequences of Climate Engineering

Salary Range: $140,000 - $180,000 a year

The University of Chicago's Department of Ecology & Evolution in the Biological Sciences Division and the Climate Systems Engineering Initiative (CSEi) are searching for tenure-track Assistant Professors in ecology. Appointees are anticipated to conduct research in one or both of the following domains: 1) developing climate carbon removal strategies using organisms, such as methods of increasing carbon storage in forests, soils, or the ocean; and/or 2) understanding the ecological consequences of various forms of climate engineering, such as sunlight reflection or carbon removal. We encourage applications from ecologists working on any group of organisms, including microbes, plants, and animals, in either terrestrial or aquatic habitats. Research may include field work, modeling, or both, but strong engagement with data from natural systems is essential. Other duties will include teaching students at the undergraduate and graduate levels.

Compensation is dependent upon qualifications. These positions are benefits-eligible. The University of Chicago offers a wide range of benefits programs and resources for eligible employees, including health, retirement, and paid time off. Information about the benefit offerings can be found in the Benefits Guidebook.

The Ecology & Evolution (E&E) Department (https://ecologyandevolution.uchicago.edu/) explores how life evolves and interacts with the environment across scales, from genes to ecosystems. The Climate Systems Engineering initiative (CSEi) (https://climateengineering.uchicago.edu/) is a new cross-divisional initiative that focuses on research and governance of deliberate interventions to mitigate climate change. Their intersection lies in understanding how climate engineering impacts ecosystems and biodiversity, with E&E providing crucial insights into ecological and evolutionary responses to CSEi’s proposed climate interventions. Appointees may leverage UChicago resources, including the Marine Biological Laboratory, the Departmental Field Station at Warren Woods, and the general expertise within Ecology & Evolution and CSEi.

Prior to the start of employment, qualified applicants must have a PhD or equivalent doctoral degree.

To be considered, those interested must apply through The University of Chicago’s Academic Recruitment job board, which uses Interfolio to accept applications: http://apply.interfolio.com/176117.
