PREP Research Associate
This position is part of the National Institute of Standards (NIST) Professional Research Experience (PREP) program. NIST recognizes that its research staff may wish to collaborate with researchers at academic institutions on specific projects of mutual interest, thus requires that such institutions must be the recipient of a PREP award. The PREP program requires staff from a wide range of backgrounds to work on scientific research in many areas. Employees in this position will perform technical work that underpins the scientific research of the collaboration.
Research Title:
Automation for Disciplinary digital asset collection generation
The work will entail:
The researcher will analyze NIST disciplinary domain space within the NIST Public Data Repository (PDR) and linked-digital environments including code repositories and manuscripts. Aggregate identification and typing will be conducted to formulate collection models based on parameterized conditions such as number, complexity and relationships between datasets in the PDR. This may be applied to specific Critical Emerging Technologies (CETs) or designated strategic areas of focus. An automated process will be developed for generation of collection and subcollection space. Using data analytics, taxonomic definition for each collection will be developed. Collection models and taxonomy access will augment APIs for metadata access. In addition, the researcher will create or update the graphical user interface to display collection models.
Key responsibilities will include but are not limited to:
- Learn and understand PDR system functionality
- Understand domain specific data and metadata standards
- API optimization and integration with AI techniques
- Regular code updates, deliver code repo along with documentation.
- Attend regular meetings with NIST
Qualifications
- A Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Manufacturing, or a related field.
- 2-3 years of relevant experience.
- Familiarity with DevOps and CICD pipelines.
- Familiarity with multiple programming and scripting languages.
- Ability to develop prototypes of tools.
- Strong oral and written communication skills.
