PREP Research Associate
This position is part of the National Institute of Standards (NIST) Professional Research Experience (PREP) program. NIST recognizes that its research staff may wish to collaborate with researchers at academic institutions on specific projects of mutual interest, thus requires that such institutions must be the recipient of a PREP award. The PREP program requires staff from a wide range of backgrounds to work on scientific research in many areas. Employees in this position will perform technical work that underpins the scientific research of the collaboration.
Research Title:
Research Workflow Engineer (RWE)
The work will entail:
The Design, development, testing and deployment of a pipeline to accommodate common research data workflows. Use cases will be selected from CHIPS Metrology funded projects. The RWE will work with the NIST research data infrastructure team to connect different existing systems and processes within the research lifecycle to create a scalable and auditable data movement pipeline. Considerations for workflow and data movement include data source and destination attributes, data sensitivity level, and access control.
Key responsibilities will include but are not limited to:
- Develop an understanding of the systems and processes of typical research data workflow.
- Design, develop, test, and deploy a workflow system that will work with existing system components and accomplish a scalable and auditable data movement pipeline.
- Incorporate data orchestration and movement with tools such as Apache Airflow and Kafka, or Dagster (or other worthy alternatives)
- Attend and present results at the weekly Research Data Infrastructure meetings.
- Ensuring that results, protocols, software, and documentation have been archived or otherwise transmitted to the larger organization.
- Regular meetings with NIST staff
Qualifications
- A bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Manufacturing, or a related field.
- 2-3 years of relevant experience.
- Familiarity with DevOps and CICD pipelines.
- Ability to work with real-time event data at scale.
- Familiarity with multiple scripting languages.
- Ability to develop prototypes of tools needed to analyze data.
- Strong oral and written communication skills.
