Responsibilities
The selected candidate will be involved in the day-to-day operations of the Florida Climate Center, especially as it pertains to outreach and communication. This position will serve as a key member of the Center for Ocean-Atmospheric Prediction Studies (COAPS) outreach team and help identify, plan, and participate in a variety of events and opportunities. Limited travel to outreach events and workshops may be required.
Responsibilities include:
- Providing climate data and services to citizens, private businesses, and government agencies in the State of Florida. Duties involve responding to inquiries about climate and weather via phone and email. Independently utilizing all resources available to answer questions and formulate data, products, and reports to meet the needs of the customer.
- Developing and disseminating regular climate products and reports, and maintaining a suite of web-based climate data products in response to needs and gaps.
- Serving as a liaison between the Florida Climate Center and our partners in climate services at the National Centers for Environmental information, Southeast Regional Climate Center, other state climate offices, and the National Weather Service.
- Performing research-related tasks as opportunities arise or as driven by public demand and in support of other projects/grants in place at COAPS. This could include independent research projects assigned by the Director of the Florida Climate Center, as well as providing data and technical support for research projects from undergraduate students, graduate students, summer interns, and faculty.
- Leading outreach/educational presentations and experiments related to climate and weather information in classroom as well as informal settings.
- Creating, editing, and distributing routine climate reports and newsletters.
- Managing and providing content to social media accounts for the Florida Climate Center.
Qualifications
A master's degree from an accredited institution in the field of Meteorology or a related science is required. A bachelor's degree in Meteorology or related field with a minimum of two years of experience in the field of Meteorology/Climatology/Climate Services or in Science Education/Outreach/Communication may also be considered. This position will be hired at the rank of Assistant in Research.
The selected candidate must also possess:
- A friendly and helpful professional demeanor and be able to work well independently as well as with a variety of groups including other scientists, the general public, and stakeholder groups, such as educators, practitioners, school-aged children, etc.
- Ability to prepare publication-quality graphics and maps, have basic web and programming skills, strong organizational skills, good oral and written communication, and the ability to write on technical subjects and make them understandable for non-scientists.
Experience with data analysis, including basic knowledge of and/or the ability to learn computer programming and statistical analysis software, such as Python, R, HTML, SASS, GIS, or Matlab, as well as some research experience, is preferred.

This is a state funded part-time position (0.50 FTE, 20 hours per week). Subject to the availability of future grant funding, the position may increase up to full-time (1.0 FTE).
