Assistant Teaching Professor in Criminology and Criminal Justice
Job Description
The University of Rhode Island is recruiting for a full-time Assistant Teaching Professor in the Department of Criminology and Criminal Justice for the 2026-2027 academic year. This is a non-tenure track appointment, limited to one year with potential renewal, commencing in Fall 2026.
About URI: The University of Rhode Island enrolls approximately 17,000 students and is the State's flagship public R1 research university, located in Kingston, near major beaches and close to Providence, Newport, Boston, and New York City.
Position Summary: This is a full-time, academic year position with teaching responsibilities.
Key Responsibilities: Teach 12 credits of criminology and criminal justice classes per semester on the Kingston campus, including introductory and upper-division courses. Hold regular office hours, attend faculty meetings, participate in department service, and foster a diverse, inclusive environment. This is a teaching-intensive role with no research expectations.
Qualifications:
- Required: Master's or Ph.D. in Criminology, Criminal Justice, Sociology, or related field by September 1, 2026; excellence in teaching undergraduate courses; ability to work with diverse groups; proficiency in communication skills.
- Preferred: Ph.D. in relevant field; experience as instructor of record; teaching large lectures or online classes.
