Assistant Teaching Professor in Criminology and Criminal Justice
Position Summary
The Department of Criminology and Criminal Justice at the University of Rhode Island is recruiting for a full-time Assistant Teaching Professor for the 2026-2027 academic year. This is a full-time, academic year, non-tenure track appointment, limited to one year with the expectation for yearly renewal, to commence in Fall 2026.
Key Responsibilities
- Teach and enhance 12 credits of criminology and criminal justice classes per semester on URI's Kingston campus or the equivalent in other duties and responsibilities as assigned. Successful candidates will teach required undergraduate introductory courses and upper-division electives courses in the major.
- Hold regular office hours for students, attend department faculty meetings and participate in service activities to the department as they pertain to normal instructional responsibilities.
- Ability to foster a diverse, inclusive, and equitable environment.
- This is a teaching-intensive position with no expectation of research.
Qualifications
Required:
- Master's or Ph.D. in Criminology, Criminal Justice, Sociology, or a closely related discipline with a specialty oriented towards criminology or criminal justice or ABD with degree conferred by September 1, 2026. (A J.D. is not sufficient for this position).
- Excellence in teaching undergraduate criminology, criminal justice, or closely related courses at the college/university level. (TA experience will be considered).
- Ability to work with diverse groups/populations.
- Proficiency in oral and written communication skills.
Preferred:
- Ph.D. in Criminology, Criminal Justice, Sociology, or closely related discipline with a specialty oriented towards criminology or criminal justice or ABD with degree conferred by September 1, 2026.
- Experience teaching criminology, criminal justice, or closely related courses at the college/university level as the instructor of record.
- Experience teaching high impact large lecture introductory classes.
- Experience teaching online or blended/hybrid classes.
