Required Qualifications:
- Master’s degree in a relevant field (e.g., research administration, law, public policy, science, or ethics)
- Federal Research Regulations: Comprehensive understanding of laws, policies, and guidance governing:
- Human subjects research (Common Rule, IRB regulations)
- Animal research (OLAW, USDA, IACUC standards)
- Biosafety (NIH Guidelines, CDC/USDA Select Agent Rules)
- Conflict of Interest (PHS, NSF, institutional policies)
- Export Control (EAR, ITAR, OFAC)
- Research Security (NSPM-33, DOE requirements, CUI, GA-48)
- Research Misconduct (ORI standards)
- Responsible Conduct of Research (RCR training mandates)
- Institutional Policy Frameworks: Familiarity with university governance structures, academic research environments, and internal compliance protocols.
- Risk Management & Ethics: Knowledge of ethical principles in research, risk assessment strategies, and investigative procedures.

Job Description:
The Assistant Vice President (AVP) for Research Compliance will serve as the primary contact for research administration, faculty researchers, and regulatory agencies. The individual hired will manage the Human Research Protection Program for both university-driven and faculty-driven human subject research, adhering to the new Common Rule and its subparts, as well as FDA regulations on good clinical practices and clinical trials.
Responsibilities include developing training materials for regulatory committee members, researchers, and compliance staff, and implementing policies, procedures, and guidance under federal, state, and local regulations, as well as university policies.
The AVP for Research Compliance provides strategic leadership and operational oversight of the university’s research compliance programs, ensuring ethical conduct, regulatory adherence, and institutional integrity across all research activities. As the university advances toward R1 status, the AVP will play a pivotal role in scaling compliance infrastructure, fostering a culture of responsible research, and supporting faculty in navigating complex regulatory landscapes.
Job Duties:
- Serves as a senior leader within the Division of Research, responsible for shaping and overseeing the university’s comprehensive research compliance framework.
- Provide strategic direction and operational leadership across multiple compliance domains, including human subjects research (IRB), animal care and use (IACUC), biosafety (IBC), conflict of interest (COI), export control, research security, research misconduct, and responsible conduct of research (RCR).
- Collaborate with faculty, staff, and university leadership to develop and implement policies that promote responsible research practices.
- Develop, design, and provide high level educational programs that promote awareness and understanding of research ethics and regulatory obligations.
- Managing and training compliance staff, providing daily supervision of research compliance activities, and ensuring the team excels in all aspects of regulated research compliance.
