Description of programme/project/undertaking
The international SPACETIME consortium investigates the spatial signatures of the tumour microenvironment in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), examining the co-evolution of the tumour and its host from disease initiation to progression. We will use high-resolution imaging of patient-derived samples collected at all stages of the disease, together with mouse models, to define recurrent cellular communities and identify key factors determining anti-tumour responses and treatment resistance. These signatures will be integrated with known risk factors, such as age, tobacco smoking and environmental pollution, as well as with immune responses in the blood and lymph nodes, recognising that cancer is a systemic disease. The project will deliver guidelines for a predictive test based on spatial signatures, designed to be clinically useful, socially acceptable, affordable and suitable for implementation across Europe. The role of the University of Warsaw (UW) team in this project is to apply machine learning methods to model the multimodal data collected throughout the project.
