The College of Engineering at Michigan State University (MSU) invites applications for a tenure-system faculty position in the Department of Biomedical Engineering. We encourage applications for appointment at the rank of Assistant Professor and will consider exceptional candidates for appointment at the rank of Associate or (Full) Professor.
Candidates must have an earned PhD in Biomedical Engineering, or a closely related discipline at the time of appointment, with an anticipated start date of August 16, 2027. The successful candidate will be expected to develop a sustainable, externally funded, and internationally recognized research program; contribute significantly to their discipline through scholarly work; demonstrate effective teaching and mentorship of both undergraduate and graduate students; and participate in institutional and professional service. Candidates are encouraged to discuss how their research could have an impact and complement the department's existing strengths.
While exceptional candidates in all areas of BME will be considered, the following research specializations will be prioritized:
- Next-Generation Bioelectronic Medicine Technologies/Medical Device Design. This targeted area of research encompasses development and innovation in bioelectronics and systems, optics and photonics, robotics, wearable and implantable systems, micro/nanotechnologies, sensing and imaging technologies, and multimodal systems. We particularly welcome candidates with research expertise that integrates innovative hardware, materials, computation, and biological systems to enable transformative approaches to sensing, diagnosis, monitoring, actuating, and therapeutic intervention.
- Biomolecular, Cellular, and Tissue Engineering. This targeted research area is broadly defined to include the design and engineering of biomolecules and materials (e.g., proteins, nucleic acids, nanoscale materials), mammalian cells (e.g. immune cells, stem cells) and microbial cells, multicellular organoid systems (New Approach Methodologies, NAMs), as well as other systems for biomedical applications. This area builds on insights gained from engineering molecules, materials, devices, or cellular microenvironments to probe and control biological processes. We seek candidates who integrate engineering principles, quantitative methods, and compelling biomedical applications to endow proteins, living cells, and cellular systems with desired functions.
- AI-Driven Research and Innovation in Biomedical Science and Engineering. We seek candidates who are interested in the rigorous and innovative use of artificial intelligence to significantly advance research and discovery in biomedical engineering. We welcome candidates who are interested in integrating AI into their biomedical engineering research to accelerate discovery and innovation in ways that may not be accessible through conventional approaches alone. The emphasis is on integrating AI with experimental, biological, engineering, or clinical research, not on developing AI methodologies as the specific end goal. The goal is to shorten discovery cycles and enable transformative biomedical advances. This area reflects our interest in harnessing emerging AI capabilities to expand the scope, speed, and impact of fundamental and translational biomedical research, as well as enable transformative biomedical advances.
Other qualifications include strong leadership and interpersonal skills, excellent written and oral communication skills, and an ability to work in a collaborative research environment. Joint appointments with other engineering departments are possible, considering existing strengths and capabilities and the candidate’s preferences. Successful candidates will be appointed to an academic-year position in the tenure system, with tenure, if appropriate. Successful candidates are expected to elevate MSU's reputation through their professional activities.
This is a union position represented by the Union of Tenure System Faculty (UTSF). The university is working with the union to establish a collective bargaining agreement.
