Overview
In 1971, Yale University established Yale Health to provide health services to its facility, staff and students through a multidisciplinary health maintenance organization located on campus. Yale Health has more than 49,000 members including students, staff, faculty and their families who come from every state in the country and almost every country in the world.
With over 50 years of service to the Yale community, our state-of-the-art facility at 55 Lock Street, is where our members receive most of their care from our 150+ providers. It is a 144,000 square foot medical facility with over 90 exam rooms, an Acute Care Department, a 15-bed inpatient facility with two negative pressure rooms, a diagnostic imaging suite including MR and CT scan, x-ray and ultrasound and a full-service retail pharmacy
The Associate Chief of Medical Affairs for Mental Health and Counseling serves as a Medical Director and senior clinical leader, supporting the Department Chief in overseeing medical practice standards, staff performance, and departmental quality and safety. In this capacity, the Associate Chief develops and implements evidence-based clinical guidelines, supervises physicians and other medical personnel, and ensures compliance with institutional and regulatory standards. They coordinate training and medical education to staff and residents, foster professional development, and lead initiatives to improve clinical outcomes and patient safety. The role also includes active participation in building-wide committees and strategic planning efforts to align departmental goals with broader institutional priorities.
As Medical Director, the Associate Chief ensures the department meets Yale Health’s quality benchmarks, oversees credentialing and privileging processes, and leads risk management and incident review efforts. They serve as the primary liaison for behavioral health integration across departments such as Student Medicine, OBGYN, Internal Medicine, and the Yale Pharmacy, promoting interdisciplinary collaboration and continuity of care. Through strategic planning, data-driven decision-making, and advocacy for mental health resources, the Associate Chief plays a central role in shaping the future of mental health services at Yale Health.
Additional responsibilities include:
- Develop and communicate medical policies and guidelines to staff and monitor adherence to those policies.
- Oversee medical staff and manage staff’s performance and provide timely feedback. Responsible for yearly performance reviews for medical staff.
- Coordinates and supervises medical education for Yale psychiatry residents as well as appropriate medical education for staff.
- Assume primary responsibility for quality and safety in the department and participate in appropriate committees.
- Serve as primary liaison to other medical departments at Yale Health as well as the Yale Pharmacy.
- Orienting and mentoring all new physicians, mid-level providers and auxiliary medical providers.
- Works with the Department Chief on recruitment and retention strategies of medical staff, assists in determination of appropriate staffing levels.
- Establishes and maintains working collaborative relationships with community referral entities, hospitals, IOP, PHP and other special referral services and social support resources to improve and expand the scope of services available.
Schedule/Shift
Full-Time; 37.5 HRS; 1/2 of time devoted to administrative responsibilities and 1/2 devoted to clinical responsibilities. Weekdays 8:30-5:00 Flexible Schedule. Early mornings, evenings, weekends, holidays/recess periods may also be required. Participates in on-call rotation.

Required Licenses/Certifications
State of CT MD license or CT MD license eligible. Current ABPN Board certification; Current DEA, CPS certification
Principal Responsibilities
Administration:
- Responsible, with nursing leadership, for day-to-day team function and workflow to include access to appointments, cross coverage, performance management, oversight, feedback, and annual performance evaluation with input from Chief, for team clinicians (MDs, PAs and APRNs.)
- Provide working leadership for a multi-disciplinary departmental team in accordance with the principles of a patient-centered medical home.
- Create an atmosphere of mutual respect, responsibility, accountability, growth, and cooperation between all team members (MA, RN, APRN, PA, MD, Clinical Receptionist). Willing to mentor and coach team members.
- Cultivate a high-quality team of clinical providers and direct the activities and professional development of team members including measures to promote retention and mitigate burnout.
- Work with clinical team to enhance accountability for department patients and ensure high level performance on established metrics.
- Participates in interviewing and selecting clinician candidates for appointment to the clinical staff of Yale Health with the goal of a diverse workforce.
- Conducts regular meetings with nursing leadership, direct reports and teams and fosters a collaborative and positive work environment.
- Participates as a member of Chiefs group, lead or serve as member on committees and projects related to quality and safety, research and education, patient experience, team-based care, panel management, operational efficiency and fiduciary responsibility at the departmental or organizational level.
- With other department leaders, establish clinical and operational quality standards and goals in accordance with organization-wide principles and standards.
- Provide coverage for department Chief as needed.
Clinical:
- Provide medically appropriate care that is patient centered, evidence-based, compassionate, and cost-effective. Serve as a standard of clinical competence, life-long learning, and responsibility. Meet departmental standards for quality of clinical care, productivity, and service.
- Define and document patients’ clinical problems and reach appropriate diagnoses; plan and execute therapy in a timely manner; keep comprehensive records of care; communicate to patients the results of testing or procedures in a timely manner.
- According to departmental standards: provide same-day and urgent care, participate in cross coverage of absent colleagues, and participate in weekend/on-call rotations.
- Provide consultation and teaching as needed for clinicians. Assist in coordinating the medical student primary care clerkship experience and educational experiences for Yale APRN and PA students in the department with the administrative team.
- Interact with nurses, medical assistants, and other front-line staff in a professional, cooperative, and supportive manner.
- Demonstrate commitment to the welfare of Yale Health patients and the department, and flexibility to meet changing clinical demands.
- Regularly attend and participate in department meetings and committee assignments. Meet regularly with Department Chief and Manager.
Required Education and Experience
Graduation from an accredited medical school, and completion of residency training at an accredited program for MD/DO. Demonstrated progressively responsible experience in a leadership role; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Salary Range
$120,000.00 - $225,000.00
