Associate Dean for Academic and Student Affairs
Summary of Position
The Associate Dean for Academic and Student Affairs (ADASA) serves as Chief Academic Officer (COA), directing and coordinating all academic and student-related functions at Michigan College of Optometry (MCO). The ADASA provides leadership to ensure compliance with all accreditation standards related to academic affairs and student services. Specific responsibilities include oversight of the curriculum, assessment of programmatic outcomes, setting faculty and student schedules, organizing disciplinary actions, developing policy letters, and maintaining faculty and student handbooks. Responsibilities also cover student services such as overseeing recruitment, admissions, student advising, development and analysis of key metrics for student success, well-being, and belonging. The ADASA coordinates student interactions with University offices, awards scholarships, maintains student records, supports student organizations, and ensures graduation for Doctor of Optometry and Bachelor of Vision Science programs. The ADASA establishes a collaborative work environment and assumes the Dean's responsibilities when unavailable. Limited clinical and instructional responsibilities may be assigned, and research activities are encouraged. The anticipated start date is January 2026.
Required Education
A Doctor of Optometry degree (O.D.) from an ACOE-accredited institution or a clinical equivalent (e.g., MD, DO).
Required Work Experience
Demonstrated work experience in a related position, preferably with leadership experience; solid understanding of optometry in the U.S. healthcare system; comprehensive administrative skills including communication, human resource supervision, and budget management; higher education experience; and demonstrated leadership in professional organizations.
Required Licenses and Certifications
Must have or be eligible to obtain a Michigan optometry license with TPA/DPA certification or equivalent, maintained throughout employment.
Essential Duties/Responsibilities
- Report directly to the Dean of MCO.
- Serve as the College's Chief Academic Officer (CAO) and Student Affairs Officer (SAO).
- Serve as liaison to organizations like NBEO, ASCO, and OptomCAS.
- Make decisions aligned with FSU and MCO missions.
- Oversee curriculum, academic programs, assessment, recruitment, admissions, and more.
- Ensure compliance with University policies and legal requirements.
- Coordinate staff and committees.
- Provide oversight for recruitment, curriculum maintenance, and program development.
- Manage data analysis, reporting, and compliance with FERPA and other standards.
- Handle student support, advising, and disciplinary processes.
- Serve on various committees and represent the College.
