Job Summary

The School of Medicine Associate Dean for Community Strategy serves as a strategic advisor to the faculty and Dean of the CU School of Medicine (SOM). This position is a member of the senior leadership team reporting to the Executive Vice Dean - Clinical. This individual will develop and implement strategies and partner with hospital/affiliate partners to develop, coordinate and expand CU SOM's presence in Metro Denver, Colorado, and beyond. The broad goal of this role is to ensure alignment across key portfolios so as to develop a unified strategic plan that drives volume and market share of priority clinical areas towards our hospital partners and CU Medicine.

The School of Medicine Associate Dean for Community Strategy represents the SOM as needed and assumes other responsibilities as requested by the Executive Vice-Dean or the Dean. This position is supported by > 20% FTE from the SOM. The School of Medicine Associate Dean for Community Strategy is a senior executive member of the SOM faculty who has a track record of clinical strategy and operations leadership in community settings. The incumbent must possess the ability to collaborate effectively with diverse stakeholders including Health System leaders, affiliate leaders, CU Medicine and SOM leaders, Department Chairs, and service line leaders.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Coordinate and execute a community growth strategy, with the goal of driving volume and market share of the key clinical service lines to our hospital partners and CU Medicine, to fuel CU SOM's academic mission and financial position.
  • Oversee and conduct systematic market analyses, specifically considering regional market characteristics (e.g. demographic and economic), competitive landscape, and current and future regional assets (e.g. hospitals, medical office buildings, ambulatory centers) to inform the development of the community growth strategy (i.e. what CU clinical programs to build where, when).
  • Collaborate with health system partners to build mutually beneficial clinical opportunities, through platforms such as the Joint Operating Committee between CU and UCHealth. This work will involve ensuring CU SOM delivers outstanding value to our health system partners, to facilitate the pursuit of joint opportunities in Metro Denver and Colorado.
  • Collaborate with Clinical Department Chairs and Service Line leaders to cultivate and strengthen strategic and operational alignment with CU SOM's community growth strategy aligned with our hospital partners.
  • Create systems and opportunities for community practices to leverage their academic affiliation and bring cutting edge clinical trials and research across the system.
  • Partner with CU Medicine's Community Practice Division leadership to oversee operational execution of the community growth strategy.
  • Monitor key performance indicators (KPIs), including patient access, volume growth, financial performance, and referral patterns.
  • Chair the Community Strategy Committee, coordinating across departments, service lines and executive leadership.
  • Develop standard procedures for CU SOM for the following issues:
    • Billing procedures and policies in the community (e.g. delegated billing)
    • Sources of capital to fund growth (Departmental vs accumulated strategic capital)
    • Compensation and practice models for community providers
    • What additional business analytics and business development capabilities will be needed in CU Medicine

Work Location:

Onsite - this role is expected to work onsite and is located in Aurora, Colorado.

Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications:

Applicants must meet minimum qualifications at the time of hire.

  • MD or equivalent degree.
  • Strong leadership experience in an academic health system, faculty practice plan, or large integrated health system.
  • Proven success in clinical growth strategy, business development, and community engagement.
  • Demonstrated understanding of healthcare delivery models, ambulatory growth strategies, and drivers of success in the community setting.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Prior experience building and managing a successful community-based clinical practice.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Strong interpersonal skills to include empathy, active listening, and emotional intelligence.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with faculty, Schools, Department Directors, Administrators, managers, and external stakeholders.
  • Knowledge of, and ability to apply, diversified financial management skills.
  • Knowledge of, and ability to apply, accepted theories, practices and principles of general management and administration, and possess sufficient advanced knowledge of the workings of an academic health campus to apply these general principles thereto.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in brief, focused and well organized oral and written presentations.
  • Ability to establish work priorities and provide follow-through to ensure completion of activities, both personally and with subordinates.
  • Ability to plan and organize, implement, and coordinate financial and administrative activities.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees at all levels throughout the institution.
  • Outstanding customer service skills.

Anticipated Pay Range:

The salary rate for this position has been established as an administrative stipend of $75,000 per annum.

The above salary rate represents the University's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting. This position is not eligible for overtime compensation unless it is non-exempt.
