Associate Director of Residence Life

General Summary:

The Associate Director will oversee residential student case management, supervise the Community Director staff and oversee departmental assessment, technology and systems to support student success. This is a "live-off" position. This position may be assigned formal on-call duties in accordance with Article 18.3 of the contract between the University and the Professional Staff Union. Assignment of on-call will be detailed using the "On-Call Assignment (Professional Staff) Form.

Examples of Duties:

Oversee the case management of student of concern cases, student code of conduct cases, and on-campus housing concern cases for all residential students;•Serve as the primary hearing officer for residential student cases marked as high-level concern to provide appropriate support and accountability for the student and connect them to the appropriate resources;•Work closely with staff, including student staff, in the Office of Housing and Residential Life, Office of the Dean of Students, the University Health Services, Counseling Center, and Undergraduate Studies to assure information and follow-up procedures are shared and streamlined for possible students of concern and provide referrals as needed;•Identify industry best practices in case management and work to implement them as appropriate for the UMass Boston community;•Support Community Director staff in conducting preventative outreach to known high-level students of concern, either past or present, throughout the academic year in conjunction with identified high stress times of the academic year, including but not limited to, midterms, registration, and finals;•Provide timely and regular follow-up to current and former students of concern;•Process incident reports from faculty, staff, students, and UMass Boston Police to create cases, develop a response plan, and assign to the appropriate party;•In collaboration with the Assistant Director of Residential Life, identify crisis prevention training needs for both professional and student staff within the department;•Develop and facilitate training sessions for staff, including student staff;•Directly supervise and evaluate Community Directors through regular one-on-one meetings, providing training and professional development opportunities, and case management support;•Provide departmental assessment support, including academic performance, retention among students living in the residence halls, student and behavioral concerns;•Represent the department on the institutional CARE team;•Regularly meet with members of the Dean of Students Office to provide updates on all residential cases;•Cultivate, manage and collaborate with community resources to connect residential students with possible resources, referrals, and programmatic needs, such as but not limited to the Massachusetts Department of Children and Families;

Qualifications:

Master's Degree in Higher Education, Student Services, Student Affairs, Counseling, or a closely related field, and a minimum of four to six years of work experience in student and/or residence life or a closely related field and experience supervising professional staff is required. Two (2) years of live-in professional Residential Life experience is required. This position requires occasional evening, weekend and holiday hours, as well as availability of outside of regularly scheduled hours for emergency response. Due to the on-call nature of the position, the Associate Director must live within 30-minutes of campus.•Knowledge of Microsoft Office suite and other administrative software (particularly Excel);•Familiarity with working with students in distress, both active and inactive, with a demonstrated ability to aid appropriately;•Familiarity with managing student code of conduct cases;•Familiarity with Star Rez and Maxient or other housing and case management software•Strong oral and written communication skills;•Strong counseling and emotional skills;•Strong interpersonal skills;•Strong organizational and problem-solving skills•Strong conflict-resolution and crisis management skills;•Strong commitment to customer and student service
