Associate Lecturer - Computational Statistics
Birkbeck, University of London, is seeking an Associate Lecturer to support a postgraduate module in Computational Statistics this Autumn 2026.
As Associate Lecturer, you would join the School of Computing and Mathematical Sciences, and support the module:
- Computational Statistics, Level 7
- 3 hours per week
- Thursdays 6-9pm, October to December 2026.
As Associate Lecturer, you will contribute to teaching and supporting students in modern computational methods in statistics, including Monte Carlo methods, resampling techniques, computationally intensive statistical inference and statistical programming.
You will have an excellent grasp of university-level statistics and experience guiding students through rigorous computational and analytical problem-solving.
Previous teaching or academic experience covering simulation methods, pseudo-random numbers, generation of random variables, variance reduction methods, randomisation tests, the bootstrap and jackknife, the EM algorithm, and non-parametric regression, smoothing and kernel density estimation is highly desirable.
Essential requirements for this role are:
- A strong academic foundation in computational statistics and statistical inference.
- The ability to clearly explain complex theoretical and computational concepts and support statistical problem-solving.
- The ability to support students in using advanced mathematical or statistical software.
- Excellent communication and organisational skills.

Remuneration
Payment is based on an hourly rate depending on length of continuous service with the College, starting rate £69.68 per hour inclusive of pro-rata London Allowance and holiday pay, for contact hours worked.
This hourly rate is based on the starting point of Grade 7 and is inclusive of a ‘Duties Related to Teaching Multiplier’ at 2.5, which covers preparation, teaching, administration, assessment marking and other examining duties in connection with the course.
