Associate Lecturer - Statistics Theory and Practice

Birkbeck, University of London, is seeking an Associate Lecturer to join the teaching team and support the School of Computing and Mathematical Sciences this Autumn 2026.

We have an opportunity for an Associate Lecturer to support a final year undergraduate module in:

  • Statistics: Theory and Practice
  • 30 hours teaching in total
  • Wednesdays 6-9pm, October to April 2027

You will have knowledge Statistics Theory and Practice and be qualified to the corresponding level of the award as required to teach (or demonstrate equivalent professional/industry level experience).

You will contribute to teaching and supporting students in statistical theory and applied statistical methods, including probability and distribution theory, statistical inference, analysis of variance, linear regression, and statistical programming in R.

You will have an excellent grasp of university-level statistics and experience guiding students through rigorous theoretical and applied statistical problem-solving.

Previous teaching or academic experience covering probability spaces, random variables, conditional distributions, the multivariate normal distribution, point and interval estimation, hypothesis testing, likelihood and sufficiency, maximum likelihood estimators, one-way designs, analysis of variance, least squares estimators, and simple and multiple linear regression is highly desirable.

Essential requirements for this role are:

  • A strong academic foundation in statistical theory and applied statistics
  • The ability to clearly explain complex theoretical concepts and support statistical problem-solving
  • The ability to support students in using R for statistical analysis
  • Excellent communication and organisational skills

Remuneration:

Payment is based on an hourly rate depending on length of continuous service with the College, starting rate £69.68 per hour inclusive of pro-rata London Allowance and holiday pay, for contact hours worked.

This hourly rate is based on the starting point of Grade 7 and is inclusive of a ‘Duties Related to Teaching Multiplier’ at 2.5, which covers preparation, teaching, administration, assessment marking and other examining duties in connection with the course.
