Job Duties: The Department of Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences (AOS) invites applications at the assistant (tenure track) or associate professor (tenured) level with research broadly related to modeling, remote sensing, and/or analysis of climate and extreme weather risk, impacts, or solutions. Applications are welcomed from researchers representing the full spectrum of the Earth System sciences (i.e., atmosphere, ocean, land, cryosphere, carbon cycle/biogeochemistry, etc.), who utilize a variety of tools including AI-based approaches, modeling, and/or observations to conduct their work. The expected start date is August 2025.
This position is part of the Wisconsin Research, Innovation and Scholarly Excellence Initiative centered on the theme of Environment: Adaptation, Resilience, Technology, and Humanity (RISE-EARTH). RISE-EARTH is intended to support scholarship that enables resilient economic and environmental systems, decarbonization, and/or the energy transition.
We especially encourage applications from individuals whose research 1) complements the AOS department's traditional strengths in climate and Earth System science, satellite remote sensing and meteorology, and atmosphere and ocean dynamics; and 2) builds on our strong ties to closely related campus units, including the UW Space Sciences and Engineering Center (SSEC); the NOAA Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS), the Data Science Institute (DSI); and the Nelson Institute's Center for Climatic Research (CCR), Center for Sustainability and Global Environment (SAGE), and Energy Analysis and Policy (EAP) Program. The successful candidate will contribute to an environment that fosters engagement and a sense of belonging for faculty, staff, students and members of the broader community.
Key Job Responsibilities: The successful candidate will develop vigorous research and teaching programs focused on the Earth's atmosphere and oceans. The successful candidate will create and maintain a strong world-class research program. The candidate will be expected to teach two undergraduate and/or graduate level courses per year, mentor graduate students, and contribute to the intellectual and academic life of the department. University and community service will be expected as appropriate. The individual will also participate in interdisciplinary and collaborative efforts with other departments, schools and colleges.

Compensation: Negotiable ACADEMIC (9 months)
Qualifications: The primary selection criteria will be individual excellence in research suggestive of future leadership potential in the field, the ability to contribute to teaching core courses at the graduate and undergraduate levels, and a strong commitment to the intellectual and academic vitality of the department and university. The successful candidate will demonstrate experience with fostering or the ability to foster a teaching, learning, departmental, and research environment where all can thrive. Candidates for the Assistant Professor title must have the potential to develop a vibrant research program in their field of specialization. Candidates for the Associate Professor title must have demonstrated excellence in scholarly research, teaching, and service which meet the requirements for associate professor with tenure as determined by the College of Letters & Science Physical Sciences Divisional Committee. Demonstrated leadership in research as evidenced by a strong journal publication record and by the ability to independently attain research grants will be a valued asset.
Education: PhD in Atmospheric & Oceanic Sciences or closely related field is required prior to the start of the appointment
