Associate Professor (Education Focused)

About the opportunity

The School of Computer Science at The University of Sydney (Sydney, Australia) invites applications for continuing Associate Professor (Education Focused). This is a role for an outstanding educator who teaches at scale, builds the infrastructure their teaching depends on, and treats computer science education as a discipline worthy of scholarship in its own right.

The successful candidate will demonstrate passion for preparing students for their future careers and the strongest commitment to enhancing the student experience, through teaching and educational innovation leadership in units of study and courses administered by the School of Computer Science (CS). Enrolments in CS units of study and courses are generally very strong and the successful candidate must be prepared to teach and coordinate at scale, iterate continually on unit design, and lead teaching teams. They will also contribute to curriculum at both unit and program level, and to develop a program of education-related scholarship over time.

The School particularly welcomes candidates who combine deep technical expertise with outstanding educational innovation: large-scale interactive learning environments, open-source course materials, autograders and educational tooling, project-based labs, and similar work that materially improves what students can do by the end of a unit. We are equally interested in candidates rethinking how programming and computing are taught in the age of AI.

About you

We are looking for Associate Professor in Computer Science (Education Focused) who have:

  • a PhD in computer science or a closely related field
  • a sustained record of excellence teaching large-enrolment computer science units — CS1, systems, software engineering, networking, mobile, security, AI systems, or similar — using interactive, hands-on approaches
  • evidence of building innovative tools and teaching environments: autograders, educational platforms, open-source course materials, simulators, or other technical infrastructure used in real teaching contexts
  • a track record (or a clear trajectory) of scholarship in computer science education, evidenced by publications, grants, or community impact
  • demonstrated ability to design, coordinate and iteratively improve units of study at scale, including leadership of teaching teams
  • leadership in curriculum design or program-level innovation, with the capacity to shape the discipline’s offerings at the School or Faculty level
  • the capacity to engage students and foster an inclusive, supportive learning environment for a diverse cohort
  • strong inter-personal and communication skills, and the ability to work collaboratively across the School, Faculty, and with industry, professional and open-source communities.
