Description

The Department of Anthropology and the Institute of Forensic Sciences at the University of Toronto Mississauga invite applications for a full-time tenure stream position in Forensic Biology. This is a joint appointment between the Department of Anthropology (51%) and the Institute of Forensic Sciences (49%). The appointment will be at the rank of Associate Professor or Professor, with an anticipated start date of July 1, 2026.

Qualifications

Applicants must have earned a PhD in Biology or a closely related field by the time of appointment. Candidates must demonstrate:

• Expertise in forensic biology, with emphasis on forensic genetics.
• A record of research excellence, evidenced by high-impact publications, presentations at significant conferences, awards, and other markers of international reputation.
• A proven record of forensic practice, including laboratory experience and/or professional activities such as casework, court testimony, or related practice.
• Evidence of excellence in teaching, supported by a teaching dossier, accomplishments, and strong reference letters.

Preferred expertise includes experience in:

• Laboratory analysis of forensic biological evidence and crime scene investigation
• Forensic serology and DNA profiling
• DNA extraction, quantitation, and PCR
• SNP genotyping (Real-Time PCR, Luminex)
• STR genotyping with capillary sequencers
• Primer design, Sanger sequencing, and massively parallel sequencing (Illumina platforms)

The successful candidate will have an established international reputation and be expected to lead a cutting-edge, externally funded research program. Collaboration with tri-campus colleagues is strongly encouraged. A graduate-level cross-appointment to a relevant department will be pursued upon hiring.
