ABOUT THE POSITION: The Department of Atmospheric & Earth Science (AES) at The University of Alabama in Huntsville (UAH) invites applications for a tenured or tenure-earning faculty position at the rank of Associate Professor. We seek an established scientist and scholar specializing in high-impact weather. Ideal candidates would pursue knowledge and increase understanding through basic research of high-impact weather events. This can involve storm-to-mesoscale observational analysis, ground-based remote sensing, numerical weather prediction and/or data science methods (machine learning/artificial intelligence), with applications in extreme weather, economic impacts, societal benefits, and national security. The successful candidate would build active collaborations within AES and also externally within the Earth System Science Center (ESSC), NASA Marshall Space Flight Center (MSFC), NOAA National Weather Service–Huntsville, Redstone Arsenal, and elsewhere.
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:
- Ph.D. in Atmospheric Science or a related field.
- Externally funded research program supporting graduate students, and peer-reviewed journal publications.
- Prior experience with securing research funding from federal, state, or industry sources in the United States.
- Strong commitment to develop an internationally recognized research program while establishing authoritative knowledge in their discipline.
- Strong commitment to student success at both the undergraduate and graduate levels through teaching and mentoring.
- Prior research advising and mentoring at the graduate level.
- Record of professional service appropriate to the career stage.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Undergraduate teaching and research mentoring experience.
- Prior classroom teaching experience at the graduate level.
- Sustainable collaborative relationships with government funding agencies.
- National/international recognition in high-impact weather or related areas.
Position Responsibilities:
- Lead an independent, cutting-edge research program and build a strong, extramurally funded portfolio with national/international visibility.
- Teach undergraduate and graduate courses in AES, including required courses.
- Contribute to curriculum development at the undergraduate and graduate levels.
- Mentor and advise undergraduate, M.S., and Ph.D. students.
- Provide service to the department, college, university, and profession.
