Associate Professor of Social Work

The Department of Social Work and Anthropology at Auburn University at Montgomery (AUM) invites applications for a 9-month tenured Associate Professor of Social Work to begin August 2026. We are expanding our BSW Program to include online and evening options, therefore, candidates must be willing to teach primarily online and in-person evening courses. This position is not remote and faculty are expected to have a campus presence. Candidates must demonstrate excellence in scholarship and research as evidenced by a strong record of peer-reviewed publications, strengths in undergraduate teaching, and a commitment to service. They must also have a demonstrated commitment to social justice, online teaching, and promoting student-faculty research. At AUM, we are committed to building and sustaining an inclusive and equitable working and learning environment for all students, staff, and faculty. We believe every member of our team enriches our diversity by exposing us to a broad range of ways to understand and engage with the world, identify challenges, and to discover, design, and deliver solutions.

AUM’s BSW program is accredited by CSWE and is one of the fastest-growing majors on our campus. Our program, grounded in a liberal arts perspective, educates social workers to be ethical and competent practitioners who intervene and advocate for social, environmental, and economic justice across all system levels (individuals, families, groups, organizations, and communities) utilizing a generalist perspective within a person-in-environment context. The program promotes a commitment to professional ethics and values, critical thinking, professionalism, lifelong learning, evidence-based practice, strengths-based perspective, justice, and service. The program is committed to culturally-responsive practice, social change, and the advancement of individuals, families, groups, organizations, communities, and society in order to create a more equitable society locally, nationally, and globally.

Duties include teaching core and elective undergraduate Social Work courses (primarily online and evenings), maintaining a productive research agenda that includes publishing and presenting in professional venues, professional advising online and on-campus students, assisting with maintaining the program’s accreditation, and adding to the service mission of the university.

A DSW or PhD in Social Work and an MSW from a CSWE-accredited program with at least two years of post-MSW practice is required. However, candidates with an MSW from a CSWE-accredited program with two years of full-time post-MSW experience and a PhD in a related field may be considered. Candidates must also be eligible to hold the rank of Associate Professor.

Other qualifications include:

  • Ability to develop and maintain effective, collaborative relationships with faculty and administration across the university
  • A record of professional activities related to social work practice and education
  • Online teaching experience preferred

How to Apply: Visit www.jobs.aum.edu and complete an online application. Completed applications will include a cover letter indicating qualifications, current curriculum vitae, a teaching dossier including a teaching philosophy and course evaluation summary (if available), a writing sample, preferably a peer-reviewed publication, a research philosophy with overview of ongoing research agenda, contact information for at least three professional references, and graduate transcript(s). Questions may be addressed to Dr. Lacey Sloan, search committee chair, at lsloan1@aum.edu or (334)244-3222. Screening of applications will begin as received with priority given to applications received by October 15, 2025. While the position will remain open until filled, AUM reserves the right to stop accepting applications once interviewing has begun. This position is not eligible for sponsorship.
