About the Department of Zoology

The Department of Zoology at Stockholm University comprises approximately 80 staff members, including researchers, doctoral students, and administrative personnel. Subject Description

The position focuses on the study of animals using experimental and/or comparative approaches, with an emphasis on ecology and evolution.

Main Responsibilities

  • Conduct independent research in zoology
  • Teach at undergraduate and graduate levels
  • Supervise bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral students
  • Participate in departmental and faculty activities

Qualification Requirements

To be eligible for appointment as Associate Professor, applicants must:

  • Hold a doctoral degree (or equivalent research expertise) relevant to the subject area
  • Demonstrate documented teaching skills
  • Show suitability for the duties of the position, including the ability to collaborate

All teaching positions at Stockholm University require general professional competence and suitability for academic work.

Teaching and Learning in Higher Education

Completed training in teaching and learning in higher education (or equivalent knowledge) is considered an advantage. Applicants who lack at least 15 credits in higher education pedagogy and are not deemed to have equivalent experience are expected to complete such training within the first two years of employment.

Assessment Criteria

In the appointment process, particular emphasis will be placed on:

  • Research expertise, with primary focus on merits within the subject area of the position
  • Teaching skills

Additional Information

  • The position corresponds to the Swedish title “universitetslektor”, a tenured role approximately equivalent to Senior Lecturer (UK) or Associate Professor (USA).
  • The successful candidate should be able to teach courses in ecology, faunistics, and/or physiology.
  • Proficiency in Swedish is not required at the time of appointment; however, the candidate is expected to acquire sufficient proficiency within a few years to undertake teaching and administrative duties in Swedish.
