Background of the recruitment and description of the project
Tokyo University of Agriculture and Technology (TUAT) is committed to fostering a diverse and inclusive academic environment in which researchers with diverse backgrounds can thrive. As part of this commitment, the Department of Biotechnology and Life science, Institute of Engineering, invites applications from outstanding female researchers for a tenured Associate Professor or Lecturer position under the University's Women's Faculty Career Development Program.
This position is intended to promote the advancement of women researchers in science and engineering. Accordingly, applications are limited to female candidates in accordance with the provisions for positive action under the Equal Employment Opportunity Act of Japan. The successful candidate will establish and lead an independent research laboratory within the Institute of Engineering. TUAT provides comprehensive support for launching a new laboratory, including startup research funding, laboratory establishment assistance, and a faculty mentoring system.
Faculty members appointed under this program are also eligible to receive support from the Institute for the Promotion of Women's Future, including programs designed to assist researchers in balancing research activities with life events such as childcare and family caregiving. The successful candidate is expected to contribute to undergraduate and graduate education by teaching courses in Biotechnology and Life science and supervising students in the Faculty and Graduate School of Engineering.
This program also provides a clear career development pathway. Approximately five years after appointment, faculty members become eligible for promotion review:
- Associate Professor → Professor
- Lecturer → Associate Professor
Candidates who are not promoted in the initial review will have additional opportunities for reassessment. The promotion schedule may also be adjusted in consideration of career interruptions due to childcare or family caregiving.
Work content and job description
Applicants should possess an outstanding research record and broad expertise in biotechnology. The successful candidates are expected to conduct innovative research with potential applications in areas such as Medical devices, Biomaterials, Food science, Pharmaceuticals, Environmental biotechnology, and Energy-related biotechnology. Applicants should also demonstrate the ability and motivation to promote cutting-edge research utilizing data science and are expected to become future leaders in the field. The successful candidate should be capable of establishing and managing an independent research program, while actively contributing to interdisciplinary education, collaborative research, and the continued development of the department from an international perspective.

Annual salary:6 million yen - 9 million yen
Wages description:≪Typical annual salary (including performance-based compensation and regional allowance, and excluding other allowances)≫
・For Associate Professor with about 12 years of experience in education and/or research after the Ph.D. course: approximately JPY 8 million (monthly basic salary will be approximately JPY 510,000)
・For Lecturer with about 4 years of experience in education and/or research after the Ph.D. course: approximately JPY 7 million (monthly basic salary will be approximately JPY 430,000)
Working hours:08:30-17:15
Holidays :Saturdays, Sundays, National Holidays, Year-end and New-year holidays (Dec 29th to Jan 3rd), and Foundation Anniversary (May 31st)

【Career Development】
A mid-term evaluation will be conducted during the third year after appointment. Promotion review will normally take place in the fifth year after appointment. Faculty members who satisfy the departmental criteria may be promoted in the sixth year. Additional promotion reviews are available if necessary. Career interruptions due to childcare or family caregiving will be appropriately considered. Regardless of the outcome of the promotion review, the original tenured appointment will remain guaranteed.

⑤In accordance with the Foreign Exchange and Foreign Trade Act of Japan, the Tokyo University of Agriculture and Technology (TUAT) conducts security screening when hiring faculty and staff. Applicants are therefore requested to provide the information necessary for this screening. If the screening determines that an applicant is subject to applicable regulations, the University may request changes to the proposed education and/or research activities. Furthermore, if an application for government authorization submitted to the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) is denied, any offer of employment may be withdrawn.
