About the College/Unit/Department:
The Department of Statistics is a growing and vibrant department of 34 faculty within the Franklin College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Georgia. The Department offers B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. degrees in Statistics; B.S. and M.S. degrees in Data Science; and an online M.S. in Applied Data Science. The Department has a strong and growing research profile, with faculty conducting theoretical, methodological, computational and applied research across a broad range of areas. In addition to making foundational contributions to the field of statistics, our faculty also collaborate broadly across disciplines, with a strong and successful record of securing multidisciplinary research funding. The Institute for Artificial Intelligence (IAI) is a separate, interdisciplinary research and instructional unit managing the A.B. in Cognitive Science and two graduate AI degree programs housing nearly 300 students. The M.S. in AI is one of the oldest such programs in the country. The Ph.D. in AI was approved in 2022. The interdisciplinary nature of AI and Cognitive Science is reflected in the mission and composition of the Institute. Eight faculty with full or partial appointments with the Institute and more than a hundred affiliated faculty members who come from several departments and colleges across UGA offer an exceptional environment to collaborate. Position Summary:
The Department of Statistics and the Institute for Artificial Intelligence (IAI) at the University of Georgia (UGA) invite applications for a tenure-track position at the rank of Associate Professor or Professor in the area of AI Systems and Causal Reasoning. The expected start date of the position is August 1, 2027. This is a joint position between the Department of Statistics and IAI, with the Department of Statistics serving as the tenure home.

Candidates for Associate Professor or Professor rank with tenure must have qualifications and academic credentials that are commensurate with promotion and tenure guidelines at UGA and must be approved for tenure upon appointment before hire. Preferred Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and/or Competencies:
We seek an accomplished scholar whose research lies at the intersection of statistics and artificial intelligence, with an interest in advancing the statistics and computation of causal reasoning for AI systems. The successful candidate is expected to have a strong background in both statistics and artificial intelligence, with a research track record demonstrating significant contributions, or strong promise of significant contributions, to both fields. Relevant research may encompass mathematical, statistical, or computational foundations of artificial intelligence. In addition to high-quality publications, the successful candidate is expected to have an established record of external research funding and demonstrate a commitment to excellence in teaching and mentoring undergraduate and graduate students.
