Associate Professor/Professor and Chair-College of Liberal and Fine Arts, Department of English

Associate Professor/ Professor and Chair of the Department of English

The University of Texas at San Antonio Department of English invites applications for a tenured Associate Professor or Professor to serve as the Chair of the Department for an initial term of three years (renewable).

The University of Texas at San Antonio

The University of Texas at San Antonio (UT San Antonio) is a nationally recognized, top-tier public research university that unites the power of higher education, biomedical discovery and healthcare within one visionary institution. As the third-largest research university in Texas and a Carnegie R1-designated institution, UT San Antonio is a model of access and excellence — advancing knowledge, social mobility and public health across South Texas and beyond. UT San Antonio serves approximately 42,000 students in 320 academic programs spanning science, engineering, medicine, health, liberal arts, AI, cybersecurity, business, education and more. With 17,000 faculty and staff, UT San Antonio has also been recognized as a Top Employer in Texas by Forbes Magazine. College of Liberal and Fine Arts

The department of English is housed within the College of Liberal and Fine Arts (COLFA). COLFA is on an accelerated trajectory of transformation and growth fueled by three major drivers: reimagining the humanities, recommitting to arts education, and bolstering social science research. The college recently established the School for Interdisciplinary Engagement, designed to further collaborative engagement and discovery around the intersections of grand challenges facing society and the human experience. The successful candidate will play a leading role in the ongoing development of the School and COLFA.

Department of English

The Department of English boasts nearly 400 majors, more than 50 MA students, and over 25 PhD students in the only doctoral program in the humanities at UT San Antonio. As one of the more complex units in COLFA, dynamic leadership is required to best position the department to face the challenges posed by dwindling emphasis on the humanities in an increasingly media-saturated environment.

The Department of English in the College of Liberal and Fine Arts at the University of Texas at San Antonio invites applications for the position of Department Chair at the rank of a tenured Associate or Full Professor, to begin July 1, 2025. Candidates should demonstrate considerable management experience and a proven ability to lead a thriving department at a R1 institution. Candidates are also expected to have a distinguished record of scholarship and teaching excellence at both the undergraduate and graduate levels, and exhibit a strong commitment to interdisciplinarity. We seek a scholar in an existing area of strength of the department—literary studies, rhetoric and composition, creative writing, or linguistics.

Position Summary

The course load in the Department is typically two courses per semester (2/2) at the undergraduate and graduate level, with the department chair receiving two course releases per year (1/1). The successful candidate will also be expected to maintain an active research agenda as administrative duties permit and to contribute to the university and community through service activities, and to show evidence of ability to secure grants and external funding where applicable.

The new chair will lead department efforts in forging and implementing long-term goals; recruiting students and faculty members; continuing to develop a robust and innovative English curriculum; and fostering faculty development and leadership.

Required Qualifications

The successful candidate will possess:

  • Doctorate in English or related field.
  • Considerable management experience.
  • Evidence of an ongoing research agenda with extensive publications commensurate with a tenured position at a research intensive university.

Applicants must apply at https://jobs.utsa.edu and upload the following in a PDF document:

  • A current Curriculum Vitae.
  • Complete contact information for at least three professional references.
  • A vision statement for the department/school (2-page limit).
  • A research statement (2-page limit).
  • A teaching statement (2-page limit).
  • A writing sample of 25-30 pages.

Tenure is contingent upon Board of Regents approval, and applicants must show a demonstrated commitment.

Deadline for applications is November 21, 2025. Preliminary screening interviews will take place on zoom in mid-December with campus visits scheduled for early February.
