Associate Professor - Professor
University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus
Department: Biomedical Informatics
Job Title: Associate Professor - Professor
Position #00839019: Requisition #:37595
Job Summary:
The Department of Biomedical Informatics (DBMI) in the University of Colorado School of Medicine is seeking a faculty member with a research program centered on developing a functional precision oncology program that moves discoveries to the bedside. The ideal candidate will use organoid-based or other rapid turnaround screens to generate uniquely valuable, clinically actionable data on meaningful timelines and who are excited to see those results drive real decisions in cancer care alongside efforts to uncover and develop more effective therapies.
The DBMI and CU Anschutz environments are ideally built for translation of work in this space through its strong connections to the University of Colorado Cancer Center, Colorado Center for Personalized Medicine, and other campus units focused on translation of data to practice. The ideal candidate will seek to lead prospective studies that close the loop from screening to care, mentor trainees at the bench-informatics interface, and help establish resources that enrich the campus environment.
Key Responsibilities:
- Develop and lead an independent research program with extramural support.
- Develop screening platforms and methodologies that enable data-driven decision making on clinically meaningful time scales.
- Collaborate with DBMI faculty and others within the discipline to combine screening with informatics approaches to advance the practice of personalized medicine.
- Individually and in collaboration with multidisciplinary teams, obtain external funding and publish impactful manuscripts.
- Mentor pre- and post-doctoral non-clinical and clinical trainees.
Work Location: Hybrid – this role is eligible for a hybrid schedule of 3 days per week on campus and as needed for in-person meetings.
Why Join Us:
The Department of Biomedical Informatics (DBMI) at the University of Colorado School of Medicine offers a mature, campus-integrated environment for translating complex data to the point of care. The availability of health records for research through Health Data Compass, large-scale biobanking and genomics through the Colorado Center for Personalized Medicine, and close collaboration with the University of Colorado Cancer Center provide ideal positioning. This setting is complemented by translational support from the Colorado Clinical and Translational Sciences Institute, enabling studies that move from protocol to implementation on clinically meaningful timelines and at scale. The strong connections between CU and UCHealth and CHCO provide ideal conditions to generate functional profiling readouts and translate them to practice. Faculty benefit from adult and pediatric clinical partnerships. The result is a setting where rigorous science can make measurable, near-term contributions to cancer care while advancing the broader field of biomedical informatics through the creation of uniquely informative datasets.
Qualifications:
Minimum Qualifications:
Associate Professor:
- PhD in biomedical informatics or a related technical field (e.g., computer science, engineering, physics, applied mathematics, statistics) OR MD/DO plus graduate degree in an appropriate technical field
- A track record of accomplishments consistent with appointment to an Associate Professor position in DBMI in the CU SOM
- PhD in biomedical informatics or a related technical field (e.g., computer science, engineering, physics, applied mathematics, statistics) OR MD/DO plus graduate degree in an appropriate technical field
- A track record of accomplishments consistent with appointment to a Professor position in DBMI in the CU SOM
- Expertise in cross-disciplinary research, particularly in the areas of cancer biology, engineering, and structural biology
- Experience with studying protein conformational changes in cancer cells and leveraging these changes for cancer therapy
- Proficiency in precision medicine approaches, including the use of patient-derived tumor organoid models to tailor treatments
- Focus on rare tumors, with experience in studying under-characterized cancers that have limited or no standard of care
- Post-doctoral experience applying technical expertise (e.g., computer science, engineering, physics, applied mathematics, statistics) to health-related applications or in clinical informatics
- Experience collaborating with researchers in multiple different domains and healthcare providers
- Accomplishments and publications in research areas spanning the boundary between the biomedical sciences and the computational sciences
- Strong computational skills as evidenced by completed projects and developed software, tools, and systems
- Self-motivation, responsibility, and dedication
