Associate Professor/Professor in Orthodontics

About the position

At the Faculty of Dentistry, University of Oslo, a permanent position as Associate Professor / Professor in Orthodontics is available. We are seeking an ambitious academic with a strong commitment to advancing research, education and clinical practice within a rapidly evolving field at the intersection of clinical care, technology and society.

The position is affiliated with the Department of Orthodontics, Institute of Clinical Dentistry. The department is responsible for research, teaching and specialist training in orthodontics, and plays a key role in the national development of the discipline.

The successful candidate will take on a strategically important role in further developing the department’s research profile, strengthening external research funding, and ensuring high quality in education and clinical training.

Duties and responsibilities

The appointee will take a leading role in developing and advancing research within orthodontics, and will supervise students, PhD candidates and specialist trainees.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Teaching
    Designing, delivering and further developing high-quality theoretical and clinical teaching at all levels, from undergraduate and graduate students to specialist trainees and PhD candidates. The position includes overall responsibility for coordinating and evaluating students’ clinical performance within the integrated clinical education, and contributing to the continued development of the specialist training programme in orthodontics.
  • Research
    Initiating and leading research projects in orthodontics, supervising research fellows, and actively securing competitive external funding. The successful candidate is expected to demonstrate a strong publication record in recognised international peer-reviewed journals and a clear, independent research profile within the discipline.
  • Innovation and academic development
    Contributing strategically to the advancement and renewal of orthodontics as a discipline, including the development of research priorities and educational programmes aligned with societal needs and technological developments.
  • Clinical engagement
    Participating in interdisciplinary management of referred patients and contributing to clinical supervision and quality assurance of treatment pathways.
  • Administrative responsibilities
    Participating in examinations, academic committees and other administrative duties in accordance with applicable regulations.

Within the scope of normal duties and academic competence, the appointee may also be assigned responsibilities outside the department or institute.

Qualifications

Qualification requirements

  • Education
    A PhD in dentistry or equivalent scientific competence is required. Specialist training in orthodontics, or equivalent qualifications.
  • Scientific competence
    Documented scientific competence within orthodontics is required.

For appointment as Associate Professor, the applicant must demonstrate solid research activity and a clear potential for further development of an independent research profile.

For appointment as Professor, the applicant must demonstrate:

  • Substantial contributions to research in accordance with international or national standards within the field.
  • Significant scientific production beyond the doctoral degree.
  • Research of high quality demonstrating both breadth and depth.
  • An established and independent research profile and sustained research activity over time
  • Documented qualifications beyond the normal duties of a lower-ranked academic position are required, either in applied knowledge or in academic leadership and administration.
  • Pedagogical competence
    Documented basic university pedagogical competence in accordance with the University of Oslo’s guidelines is required. Applicants who do not document such competence at the time of appointment must obtain it within two years of appointment.

For appointment as Professor, documented experience in the following areas is required:

  • Planning, delivery and evaluation of teaching across levels.
  • Supervision experience, preferably at master’s and PhD level.
  • Systematic development work related to teaching and supervision.
  • Contribution to educational quality enhancement within the academic community.
  • Language requirements
    Proficiency in Norwegian and English, written and oral, is required to fulfil the duties of the position. Applicants who cannot document proficiency in Norwegian at a minimum B2 level (or another Scandinavian language) must acquire such competence within three years of appointment.

  • Salary as Associate Professor (position code 1011): NOK 820,000–920,000 per year, depending on qualifications and experience or
    Salary as Professor (position code 1013): NOK 850,000–1,100,000 per year, depending on qualifications and experience.
  • A statutory contribution of 2% to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund will be deducted from the salary.

  • A cover letter describing the applicant’s motivation and explaining how their qualifications are suited to the position.
  • A curriculum vitae providing a comprehensive overview of education, previous positions, teaching experience, clinical practice, administrative experience, and other relevant activities.
  • A complete list of scientific publications.
  • A separate list of up to ten scientific works that the applicant wishes to have considered in particular detail. These works must be uploaded together with the application, accompanied by a brief statement explaining their relevance.
  • An overview of supervision of PhD candidates. The relevant form must be completed, and confirmation of supervision must be attached.
  • A documented overview of pedagogical competence and teaching experience.
  • A research plan outlining future research activities, including a strategy for obtaining external funding.
  • A description of the applicant’s research profile and how it relates to the strategic priorities of the department and the faculty.
  • Documentation of proficiency in Norwegian (minimum B2 level) or another Scandinavian language, and in English.
  • Any other qualifications considered relevant to the position.
  • The names and contact details of at least two referees.

In the final assessment, qualifications relevant to the position description, the evaluation by the expert committee, and the assessment of personal suitability based on interviews and references will form the basis for the recommendation.
