Associate Professorship in History of Pre-Modern Japan

The Faculty, in association with Wolfson College, seeks to appoint an Associate Professor in the History of Pre-Modern Japan, available from 1st October 2026. This post, based at the Nissan Institute of Japanese Studies, will contribute to the teaching of Japanese history at undergraduate and postgraduate level, including co-ordination of the East Asia Survey course that is core to the Japanese and Chinese undergraduate degrees. The postholder will undertake research in Japanese history of the pre-modern (pre-1868) period and supervise graduate students, as well as taking responsibility for pastoral care for graduate students at Wolfson College.

The successful candidate will have a doctorate in pre-modern Japanese history or a related field, and a thorough knowledge of the relevant historical sources and methodologies. They will come with an internationally recognised record of research and publication in the field, and clear plans for future research. The postholder’s expertise in Japanese language will be such to enable the use of primary sources in the original language for research and teaching. They will be able to demonstrate the ability to educate and inspire undergraduate and graduate students, and to train, motivate and guide research students. Excellent communication, interpersonal and organisational skills are also essential.

Associate Professor is the main academic career grade at Oxford with a focus on research and teaching. This post will be held in conjunction with a Fellowship at Wolfson College. The Fellowship carries no teaching duties for the College, but the Fellow will have responsibility for pastoral care of graduate students at the College, to act as College Advisor for graduate students, and to participate in the governance and administration of the College.

We particularly welcome applications from women and from black and minority ethnic candidates, who are currently under-represented in senior academic positions at Oxford. If, for any reason, you have taken a career break or have had an atypical career and wish to disclose this in your application, the selection committee will take this into account, recognising that the quantity of your research may be reduced as a result.

To make informal enquiries about the post, please contact Professor Linda Flores.

Applications for this vacancy are to be made online and you will be required to upload a supporting statement and CV as part of your application. Your supporting statement must explain how you meet each of the selection criteria for the post. Your application will not be considered without a supporting statement.

This post will close at 12 noon on 5th January 2026. Interviews will be held on or around 12th February 2026.
