Associate Research Scientist

The Vyas Laboratory at Columbia University Vagelos College of Physicians & Surgeons studies the intersection between pathogenic fungal organisms and initial host responses. Invasive fungal infections are a leading cause of death among immunocompromised patients. It is, therefore, essential to define the cellular and molecular mechanisms of host-pathogen interactions to improve outcomes for patients with invasive fungal infections. Using animal models, cell culture systems, and patient samples, the NIH-funded Vyas Laboratory investigates the mechanisms involved in responses to fungi in lung and bloodstream fungal infections to reveal novel therapeutic targets for high-risk patients.

The Vyas lab seeks an Associate Research Scientist (ARS) interested in the host immune cellular-fungal interaction to join our research laboratory to further NIH-funded research skills under mentorship by the PI. The ARS will focus on conducting independent research projects within the field of fungal immunology, and contributing to the generation of new scientific knowledge.

Key Responsibilities:

Research Design and Execution:

  • Independently design, execute, and analyze complex experiments related to the immune system, including cell culture, animal models, flow cytometry, molecular biology techniques, and immunological assays.
  • Contribute to the development of new research hypotheses and experimental approaches within the lab's focus area (e.g., cancer immunology, autoimmune diseases, infectious diseases, etc.).
  • Maintain detailed and accurate laboratory notebooks, data analysis, and record keeping.

Publication and Dissemination of Research Findings:

  • Prepare manuscripts for publication in high-impact scientific journals, including data analysis, writing, and editing.
  • Present research findings at scientific conferences and seminars.
  • Assist in the preparation of grant applications to secure funding for research projects.

Mentorship and Collaboration:

  • Collaborate with other researchers within the laboratory and across disciplines to facilitate research progress.
  • Mentor and train graduate students, technicians, and other junior lab members on experimental techniques and research protocols.
  • Actively participate in lab meetings, journal clubs, and scientific discussions.

Qualifications:

  • A PhD in Immunology, Cell Biology, Microbiology, or a closely related field.
  • Demonstrated expertise in experimental techniques relevant to immunology research, including cell culture, flow cytometry, molecular biology, and animal models of infection.
  • Strong publication record in peer-reviewed scientific journals.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, including the ability to present research findings at conferences and in scientific manuscripts.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative research team.
  • Strong critical thinking and problem-solving skills.

Desired Skills:

  • Experience with specific areas of immunology research, such as macrophage and neutrophil and immune regulation.
  • Familiarity with advanced techniques like next-generation sequencing, CRISPR-Cas9 gene editing, and/or high-throughput screening.
