Associate Senior Lecturer in Archaeology with Specialisation in Osteology

The Department of Archaeology, Ancient History and Conservation is seeking an Associate Senior Lecturer in Archaeology with Specialisation in Osteology, to be based at Campus Gotland in Visby. The position is part of a dynamic and expanding research environment with just under one hundred staff members across both Visby and Uppsala. The department comprises seven main subject areas offering education at undergraduate, Master’s, and doctoral level: Classical Archaeology and Ancient History, Archaeology, Assyriology, Egyptology, Conservation, Osteology, and Global Environmental History.
The department's activities at Campus Gotland are currently in an expansive phase, with around thirty staff members working in Conservation, Archaeology, and Osteology. We now aim to further strengthen this environment through the recruitment of an Associate Senior Lecturer in Archaeology with Specialisation in Osteology. In close collaboration with other colleagues, the successful candidate is expected to contribute to high-quality teaching at undergraduate and advanced level, course development, and pedagogical innovation. Through their research expertise and scholarly engagement, the candidate is also expected to contribute to the strategic focus area Cultural Heritage at Uppsala University Campus Gotland.
Period of employment and promotion
The position of associate senior lecturer can be held for a maximum of four years, with the possibility of being considered for promotion to senior lecturer. The associate senior lecturer is expected to apply for promotion to senior lecturer towards the end of the four-year period. The criteria for promotion to senior lecturer are set out in Uppsala University’s Appointment Regulations and the Faculty of Art’s supplementary guidelines to the Appointment Regulations.
Duties
The duties of the position consist of teaching, research and administration in archaeology and human and animal osteology. Teaching includes course responsibility, course administration and supervision. Teaching is conducted through lectures, seminars, and practical laboratory work at all levels. Parts of the teaching may take place in the field or via video link. The proportion of teaching, including course administration, amounts to maximum 50 percent.
The proportion of research amounts to at least 50 percent of the full-time position. The candidate’s own research is expected to strengthen and develop the department’s research profile in archaeology with a focus on osteology, as well as the university-wide focus area of cultural heritage, in collaboration with the department’s other main subject areas. The duties also include actively applying for external research funding as well as contributing to the increased recruitment of doctoral students and researchers at the department.
Additional duties may include various types of collegial assignments within the department or the university more broadly. Another important responsibility is to stay informed about developments within one’s own subject area and broader societal trends that are relevant to the work of the university.
Eligibility requirements
Applicants are eligible for employment as Associate Senior Lecturer if they hold a doctoral degree in archaeology, classical archaeology and ancient history, Egyptology, historical osteology, archaeoosteology, osteoarchaeology, biological anthropology, zooarchaeology, archaeobiology, and bioarchaeology or have the equivalent academic competence and have demonstrated pedagogical competence. It is a requirement that the applicant’s academic, pedagogical, and professional competence is relevant to the subject area and duties that the position involves.
Primary consideration will be given to applicants who have been awarded a doctoral degree or achieved the equivalent expertise within no more than five years of the application deadline.
In order to meet the requirement of pedagogical competence, the applicant should have completed at least five weeks of relevant training in tertiary-level teaching or acquired the equivalent competence in other ways. In special circumstances, the training can be carried out during the first two years of employment. In order to qualify as a doctoral student supervisor, supervisor training is required.
The documented ability to teach in Swedish and English is required. If there are special circumstances, those who are unable to manage teaching and administrative duties in Swedish may be expected to obtain this ability within two years.
In addition, as a general qualification for teachers, applicants must have the personal characteristics required to carry out the duties of the position well, such as flexibility, a sense of responsibility, good team-working abilities, and the ability to work independently.
