Associate senior lecturer in medical biochemistry

The Department of Medical Biochemistry and Biophysics (MBB) is one of the largest departments at Karolinska Institutet, and focuses on basic research in the biomedical field. We have a long and proud history of cutting-edge science, particularly the development of innovative methods and their application to understanding basic human biology and the mechanisms behind disease. MBB also participates in teaching at undergraduate level in the medical and biomedicine programs, and is responsible for courses in biochemistry, general & organic chemistry, chemical biology and a number of project-specific courses. We are also responsible for Karolinska Institutet's chemistry laboratory premises at the Scheele Laboratory. To further strengthen the quality of teaching, we now want to recruit a committed and driven teacher who can be involved in driving the development of our undergraduate education in parallel with conducting research in one of the department's spheres of interest.
Your mission
Your main tasks will include teaching and course/module management within MBB's course offerings in the medical and biomedicine programs, as well as project supervision and development of teaching conducted by MBB. The estimated scope of work with the department's teaching is 50%, while 50% of the employment is devoted to research and skills development. Your research focus must fit well into the department's research profile. The position will be placed within MBB's Teaching Division and the immediate manager will be the Director of Undergraduate Education (GUA) while the research will be located at one of MBB's research departments in agreement with the relevant Head of Division.
The position as an associate senior lecturer is a fixed-term position of 6 years with the right to be considered for a promotion to senior lecturer, which in this case is expected to be a senior lecturer position with a focus on education and research.
Required knowledge
To be eligible for employment as an associate senior lecturer, the applicant must have obtained a doctoral degree or have achieved equivalent scientific competence. Priority should be given to those who have completed a doctoral degree or have achieved equivalent competence no more than five years before the end of the application period. However, those who have completed a doctoral degree or achieved equivalent competence previously may also be considered if there are special reasons.
Special reasons refer to:
- parental leave
- positions of trust in trade unions
- compulsory service in the total defence
- longer illness
The reason, date and extent must be clearly specified in the application and must be substantiated by certificates.
In order for you to be considered eligible for employment as an associate senior lecturer, you must demonstrate good research expertise and good teaching expertise. (See instructions for the Appointment Procedure for Teachers at Karolinska Institutet).
In addition, you must have completed training in teaching and learning in higher education comprising three weeks in accordance with SUHF's recommendations for qualifying training in teaching and learning in higher education. If such training is lacking at the time of employment, you must undergo such training within the framework of the employment during the first two years of employment.
The subject area of the senior lecturership is medical biochemistry. The applicant must have defended a thesis in a preclinical subject, preferably biochemistry or a specialty of molecular medicine, and after the public defence of the thesis have been active in undergraduate education and research in this subject.
Since the teaching at the medical programme is predominantly in Swedish, the person who is employed must have good knowledge of Swedish. It is expected that applicants also have good knowledge of English. The applicant's research focus must fit well into the department's research profile. If equal qualifications exist, priority shall be given to applicants who contribute to a more even gender distribution at the department.
Assessment criteria
The position has a focus on education and research. In the assessment, merits will be weighted in descending order as follows: teaching expertise (3), research expertise (2), management, development and collaboration expertise (1).
Regarding teaching expertise, the following are meritorious:
- Experience of teaching in different formats (lecture/exercise/laboratory) in medical biochemistry and bio-/organic chemistry
- Experience of course responsibility/moment responsibility
- Experience of pedagogical development projects/course development
- Proven good ability to successfully lead student groups
- Experience of project supervision of students

Special examination for promotion to senior lecturer
An assistant professor who is employed in accordance with Chapter 4. Section 12 a of the Higher Education Ordinance shall, upon application, be promoted to senior lecturer if the person is qualified for an employment as a senior lecturer in accordance with KI's instructions for the Appointment Procedure and is deemed suitable for such an appointment in accordance with the assessment criteria that KI has determined shall be applied in a case concerning promotion to senior lecturer.
When applying for promotion to senior lecturer, the assessment criteria set out in the instructions for the appointment procedure that applied at the time of taking up the position as associate senior lecturer are applied. Current assessment criteria can be found here. Such a promotion entails a permanent employment as a senior lecturer.
