Essential Job Duties: The Associate Vice Chancellor (AVC) for Facilities serves as the Chief Facilities Officer, and is a strategic, collaborative and visionary senior leader responsible for the stewardship of NC State's extensive and varied physical campus assets and infrastructure - a portfolio spanning nearly 1,200 buildings and structures on more than 100,000 acres across the state, with a presence in all 100 North Carolina counties. In Raleigh, the AVC provides executive oversight of ~450 buildings on 4,700 acres across seven precincts, including Main Campus, Centennial Campus and the Centennial Biomedical Campus, home to the College of Veterinary Medicine and Veterinary Hospital with 24/7 operations. The AVC directs all facilities planning, design, construction, operations and maintenance for NC State. The AVC leads an 800+ employee workforce across four departments: Campus Planning and Strategic Investment, Design and Construction, Campus Operations and Maintenance, and Business Operations. This broad leadership responsibility is carried out through a team of seven direct reports - including a Director of Safety, emphasizing the critical importance of workplace safety at NC State. The AVC reports directly to the Executive Vice Chancellor for Finance and Administration, who leads the Office of Finance and Administration (OFA); and joins a leadership team of Associate Vice Chancellors responsible for seven OFA divisions: Budget and Resource Management, Campus Enterprises, Environmental Health and Public Safety, Facilities, Finance, University Human Resources, and University Real Estate and Development.
Strategy and Leadership:
- Serves as one of the university's senior leaders, providing vision and strategy in support of NC State's mission and strategic plan, Wolfpack 2030: Powering the Extraordinary.
- As a direct report to the Executive Vice Chancellor for Finance and Administration, joins five other Associate Vice Chancellors in promoting the Principles of Work (employee engagement, customer service, responsible stewardship) throughout the Office of Finance and Administration, and NC State.
- Advises university leadership, engaging routinely with the Chancellor, Provost, Cabinet, College Deans, NC State Board of Trustees and other senior university officials and their staff.
- Serves on university task forces and committees, in support of strategic initiatives, governance and compliance matters, and operational improvements/university effectiveness efforts.
- Represents the university to external stakeholders including the UNC System, City of Raleigh, Wake County, state and federal entities and professional organizations.
- Facilitates the university's space planning and Campus Development Process in alignment with the 2023 Physical Master Plan and space allocation policies to support strategic campus growth; serves as a key advisor to the Campus Development Committee, chaired by the Executive Vice Chancellor and Provost, with responsibility for governing the university's physical campus development.
- Serves as a staff advisor to the NC State Board of Trustees Buildings and Property Committee Chair.
- Represents the university in high-level negotiations with state, city and county officials concerning state agency oversight, real estate transactions, zoning, jurisdictional matters and construction issues.
- In partnership with University Communications, represents the university in interactions with the public at large and the media.
- Plans and conducts special assignments as delegated by the Chancellor or the Executive Vice Chancellor for Finance and Administration.
- Advises on projects involving research and/or investigation of issues, which could result in new policies or programs at the university level.
Oversight of the Facilities Division:
- Provides senior leadership for a workforce of 800+ employees across four departments within the Facilities Division: Campus Planning and Strategic Investment, Design and Construction, Campus Operations and Maintenance, and Business Operations.
- Oversees the Facilities Safety Department within the division, responsible for fostering a culture of safety and compliance across the division's wide range of trades; and provides safety oversight of all campus construction.
- Leads efforts in career development, performance management and training to build a highly skilled workforce focused on safety, service, stewardship and staff development.
- Oversees the university's capital design and construction program, currently valued at $2.5 billion, and manages an operating budget exceeding $100 million.
- Coordinates capital budget priorities in collaboration with deans, senior leaders, executive officers and the University of North Carolina System Office.
- Manages resources to ensure high-quality, cost-efficient, effective facilities and related services and operations.
- Implements continuous improvement strategies across facilities services and operations, campus infrastructure and energy management.
- Leads university sustainability efforts in collaboration with university stakeholders including academia, researchers and students.
- Ensures effective communication, partnership and collaboration throughout the Facilities Division and across the university community, emphasizing customer service, stakeholder engagement and safety.

Minimum Experience/Education:
- Requires a relevant post-baccalaureate degree with a minimum of five (5) years or greater of related professional experience, or a relevant undergraduate degree and a minimum of ten (10) years or greater of relevant experience may be substituted for the advanced degree. All degrees must be from appropriately accredited institutions.
- Demonstrated strategic and visionary leadership experience in managing large-scale facilities and operations within complex organizations.
- Proven experience managing multi-million dollar capital and construction projects; evidence of sound judgment in evaluating and executing complex initiatives.
- Extensive experience leading varied work teams and supervising multiple departments, including cross-functional collaboration on large-scale initiatives.
- Broad knowledge of federal, state and institutional regulations, with the ability to effectively integrate new compliance requirements.
- Proven track record of applying industry best practices to drive efficiency, safety and service excellence.
Required Qualifications:
- Skilled in implementing innovative operational improvements, workforce development and resource optimization strategies.
- Exceptional organizational, analytical and communication skills, with the ability to convey complex information clearly and build strong working relationships across all organizational levels.
- Commitment to integrity, professionalism, confidentiality, employee engagement, customer service, responsible stewardship and safety.
Preferred Qualifications:
- The successful candidate will likely possess 10-15 years or more of applicable, increasingly complex and successful senior leadership experience in campus planning, facilities operations, construction management, and business operations.
- Professional licensed engineer.
Required License or Certification:
- Valid NC Driver's License.
