Position Overview

Primary Purpose of Position

Contribute as an experienced advisor for planning fund-raising initiatives and serve as a strategic partner to the Vice Chancellor for Advancement. Advise on key strategic issues, e.g., gift processes, policies and gift agreements, as well as fundraising priorities, prospect engagement tactics and overall direction of the office. Provide guidance on issues relating to fundraising administration and operations, including prospect data, information technology, donor gift agreements, donor stewardship, budget, gift processing, finance, and personnel. Perform statistical analysis and evaluation of results and programs to aid in evaluating fundraising programs.

Lead a staff of fundraising professionals, including systems and reporting, information technology, prospect management and research, and donor relations/stewardship, foundation operations, and office administration. Establish best practices and provide direction for streamlining programs and initiating new programs. Lead strategic planning for Major Gift Prospecting and Operations programs.

Proactively manage all fundraising-related policies and procedures. Oversee and provide recommendations to Vice Chancellor for Advancement for policies requiring governance board approval, such as endowment minimums and naming of physical space. Ensure policies are implemented as executed and as written.

Primary Function of Organizational Unit

The mission of the Division is to expand the University’s relationship with its many constituents for purposes of increasing both the financial and human resources of the University; to maintain the goodwill and support of the University’s many constituents; and to market the University, its programs and services to their best possible advantage.

Minimum Requirements

Bachelor’s degree required with a minimum of seven years as advancement operations manager and supervisor, managing and training people, overseeing information systems, prospect research/tracking, donor relations. Familiarity with human resources and budgets required. Demonstrated ability to focus strategically while also effectively managing daily operations and implementing changes.

Candidate should be data driven in decision making, have strong analytic skills, and be able to build strong customer-focused teams. Candidate should have strong leadership and planning skills as a self starter and motivator with superior interpersonal skills. The chosen candidate will be an accomplished, energetic advancement operations leader with a track record of serving the complex needs of a large institution through successful management of a multi-faceted development operation. He or she will have excellent operational and technical skills matched with extremely effective interpersonal abilities and strong political acumen.

Additional Preferred/Desired Qualifications

  • Experience in a higher education setting.
  • Solid understanding of fundraising principles.
  • Familiarity and understanding of IRS regulations regarding tax issues and CASE standards for reporting.
  • Technical experience with relational databases and reporting tools. Familiarity with Ellucian Banner Advancement.
  • Excellent communication skills, including the ability to translate fundraisers’ needs into technical output.
  • Financial experience related to foundation/not for profit accounting and finance and endowment management.
  • An approach to management that brings out the best in staff and yields pride, ownership and a sense of team effort. Proven leadership skills to inspire confidence as well as to motivate others.
  • Demonstrated ability to conceptualize and implement development programs of complexity, including the ability to envision and articulate future direction.
  • Demonstrated experience with budget presentation, planning and resource management;
  • An employment history highlighted by increasing levels of responsibilities.
  • A strong team player with a sense of humor preferred.
  • Have some understanding of the unique Planned Giving, Annual Giving and Corporate Foundations Fundraising Process.
  • Demonstrated ability to plan strategically in all aspects of fundraising.
