University of Maryland Global Campus (UMGC) seeks an experienced and mission-driven servant leader to serve as Associate Vice President of Academic Affairs and Associate Dean (AVP AA). Based on Yokota Air Base (Tokyo Prefecture) the AVP AA reports directly to the Vice President & Director, Asia (VP), and supervises and directs areas related to faculty and academic affairs. The position oversees faculty at over 20 locations across Japan, Okinawa, South Korea, and Guam, requiring exceptional leadership skills in managing large, dispersed operations, across multiple time zones.

The AVP AA serves as the senior academic officer of the division and provides leadership in implementing academic initiatives. They are responsible for planning and executing all academic operations in the division, including faculty relations and student support, and for ensuring the quality of the delivery of all academic programs and curricula. In addition, the AVP AA is responsible for liaising with key stakeholders in all three (3) of the University's divisions and executing the efficient, strategic implementation of programs and initiatives throughout the Asia division. This entails participation in Curriculum Committees and several ad hoc meetings across many stateside departments. When both the Vice President & Director and the Associate Vice President & Deputy Director are out of the office, this position is next in succession.

This role requires a relentless focus on student success and persistence across all learning modalities-face-to-face, hybrid, virtual and online. The AVP AA will lead real-time interventions for students who may be struggling academically, ensuring immediate support both in-person and online.

The successful candidate will bring an incessant passion for challenging the status quo, changing how the world defines effective learning, and reshaping how learning quality, impact, and efficacy are evaluated in an AI-enabled future.

A spirit of collegiality, collaboration, and accountability is essential for this highly visible position. The AVP AA will guide UMGC Asia's teams in delivering exceptional learning experiences while being accountable for the following:

  • Leading and primarily responsible for the academic enterprise in Asia, including, but not limited to: enforcing academic policies, curriculum delivery, academic outcomes assessment, faculty assessment, and faculty training
  • Acting as the elevated point of contact for classroom concerns, working to resolve problems on an informal basis, and ensuring that student and faculty concerns are addressed and appropriately
  • Designing proactive, data-driven interventions that help students succeed and ensure a consistent UMGC experience as they travel and transfer globally
  • Leveraging data and digital tools to identify and engage at-risk students in real time
  • Overseeing recruitment, hiring, orientation, and management of faculty to include full-time and adjunct faculty
  • Adapting and localizing best practices from UMGC's global communities of practice in faculty hiring, teaching, and academics to provide outstanding service
  • Creating a team culture that prioritizes exceptional student learning experiences across all modalities
  • Collaborating across UMGC Asia, Europe, and Stateside to fulfill the One Global University vision
  • Modeling and upholding UMGC's core values
  • Performing other job-related duties as assigned

In addition to these duties, the AVP AA also holds a faculty rank.
