A cover letter is required for consideration for this position and should be attached as the first page of your resume. The cover letter should address your specific interest in the position and outline skills and experience that directly relate to this position.
The Department of Nuclear Engineering and Radiological Sciences is seeking an Assistant Research Scientist to join our team and contribute to our pioneering research in plasma physics. The successful candidate will be involved in a variety of research projects, including:
- Kinetic theory for non-neutral plasmas in antimatter traps, including the strong magnetization and strong coupling conditions found in these experiments.
- Conducting molecular dynamics simulations to compute plasma transport properties in strongly magnetized plasmas.
- Collaborating with experimentalists to design experiments to test the model predictions for transport rates.
The role will also involve publishing and presenting research findings in top-tier scientific journals and conferences, participating in instructional activities and course lectures as appropriate, mentoring undergraduate and graduate students, and serving on dissertation committees.
The ideal candidate will be a self-starter, capable of developing independent research proposals, and will contribute to the academic and professional community through continuous scholarly activities and collaborations and mentoring and teaching activities with undergraduate and graduate students.
Required Qualifications:
- Ph.D. in Physics, Applied Physics, or a related field, with a focus on plasma physics theory and simulation
- A minimum of 2 years of postdoctoral research experience in plasma physics, including research in plasma kinetic theory and molecular dynamics simulations
- Demonstrated potential for scholarly development, supported by multiple first-author, peer-reviewed scientific journal publication in the field of plasma physics
- Proven ability to work collaboratively in interdisciplinary teams and interact effectively with both technical and non-technical stakeholders
- Strong mentoring skills, with experience supervising undergraduate and graduate research projects
- Active participation and a record of presentations at relevant academic and professional meetings
- Experience with collaborative research projects
- Experience teaching the undergraduate and graduate level
- Service and appropriate leadership roles in the plasma physics community
