Role Summary
This position provides assessment, diagnosis, mental performance support, and counseling for student athletes. The incumbent provides clinical services under the direction of a Licensed Sport Psychologist; conducts mental health, drug, and alcohol assessment, diagnosis, and counseling for student athletes; provides mental performance support and develops, plans, and implements educational programs including diversity and inclusion for coaches and athletes.
Examples of Work Performed
- Provides clinical services under the direction of a Licensed Sports Psychologist to student athletes, including psychotherapy, crisis management and assessment.
- Evaluates, counsels, and treats student athletes with substance abuse issues, addiction and other mental health issues.
- Conducts drug and alcohol assessments as necessary.
- Makes recommendations regarding appropriate level and modality of treatment for student athletes.
- Provides appropriate feedback when applicable to staff that may be involved the treatment of the student athletes.
- Develops relationships with student athletes, staff members, parents, and coaches and provides counseling to student athletes as requested.
- Communicates with director of health and sport performance about the continuity of care.
- Develops and implements programming under the direction of the sport psychologist.
- Creates and presents educational content for coaches and student athletes.
- Ensures all assigned tasks are in compliance with University, SEC Conference, and NCAA rules and regulations.
- Performs other related or similar duties as required or assigned.
Essential Functions
These essential functions include, but are not limited to, the following. Additional essential functions may be identified and included by the hiring department.
- Provides professional mental health counseling to students in the form of individual, group, and couples therapy.
- Provides crisis intervention for students experiencing a psychological emergency.
- Consults with academic departments and student affairs departments.
- May be involved in crisis prevention, or aiding with adjustment problems after a major life event.
- Maintains confidential records.
Minimum Education/Experience
Education: A Master's Degree in counseling, psychology, social work, or related field from an accredited four-year college or university.
Experience: One (1) year of experience related to the above described duties.
Licensure: LPC (Licensed Professional Counselor) or PLPC (Provisionally Licensed Professional Counselor) or LCSW (Licensed Clinical Social Worker) in the State of Mississippi or license-eligible. If license-eligible, must complete licensure requirements within 24 months of date of hire.

Physical Exertion: The incumbent may be required to lift up to approximately 10 pounds.
Vision: Requirements of this job include close vision.
Speaking/Hearing: Ability to give and receive information through speaking and listening.
Motor Coordination: While performing the duties of this job, the incumbent is frequently required to talk and hear; and use hands to finger, handle, or feel. The incumbent is periodically required to sit. The incumbent is occasionally required to stand; walk; and reach with hands and arms.
