ATSU - HVAC Mechanic II
Description
A.T. Still University (ATSU) is seeking a full-time, non-exempt
HVAC Mechanic II on the Kirkville, Missouri campus. The HVAC
Mechanic II is responsible for the installation, maintenance,
repair, and optimization of heating, ventilation, air conditioning,
refrigeration, and building automation systems across the
Kirksville campus in support of the university's daily operations.
This position ensures optimal performance of HVAC systems to
provide a safe, comfortable, and energy-efficient environment for
students, faculty, staff, patients, and visitors. The HVAC Mechanic
II will respond to service requests from building occupants in a
respectful and timely manner, ensuring a welcoming and inclusive
environment. They will also perform preventive maintenance,
advanced troubleshooting, system optimization, and HVAC
project-related work. Perform HVAC-related project work, including
system installations, equipment replacements, renovations,
upgrades, and commissioning activities to support campus
operational and capital improvement objectives. This position will
utilize, monitor and troubleshoot HVAC controls software systems to
monitor performance, identify deficiencies, and optimize building
operations. The HVAC Mechanic II reports to the Assistant Director
of Facilities and Plant Operations.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Perform routine and emergency repairs, maintenance, and
preventive maintenance on HVAC, refrigeration, mechanical,
electrical, and plumbing systems.
Install, maintain, and repair HVAC and refrigeration systems
including air handling units, boilers, chillers, cooling towers,
rooftop units, VAV boxes, pumps, exhaust systems, and associated
controls.
Perform scheduled preventive maintenance on HVAC systems and
related equipment to ensure efficient operation and prevent
equipment failures.
Troubleshoot, diagnose, and repair complex HVAC, refrigeration,
electrical, mechanical, and control system malfunctions.
Monitor, troubleshoot, and optimize building automation and
HVAC control systems.
Respond to service requests from building occupants in a
respectful and timely manner, ensuring a welcoming and inclusive
environment.
Perform general and complex construction tasks related to HVAC
projects and renovations.
Maintain electronic records related to work requests,
preventive maintenance activities, and equipment repairs.
Respond to campus emergencies throughout the day.
Operate university vehicles and report observed safety and
maintenance needs.
Communicate with building occupants the coordinate work in
occupied areas.
Troubleshoot issues pertaining to ultra-low temperature freezer
systems.
Perform inventory of filters, belts, and critical HVAC
components to ensure adequate stock levels.
Replace major HVAC components including compressors, condenser
coils, evaporator coils, motors, drives, bearings, and control
devices.
Adjust manual and actuated dampers for airflow and air
balancing requirements.
Clean condenser and evaporator coils and inspect equipment for
operational efficiency.
Regularly clean condenser and evaporator coils of debris
Assist co-workers as directed by the Assistant Director and
Director of Facilities and Plant Operations.
Participate in HVAC projects and coordinate activities with
vendors, contractors, and other trades as assigned.
Refuel university vehicle after use when necessary.
Assist with the design, replacement, and commissioning of HVAC
heating and cooling systems.
Perform HVAC work associated with construction and renovation
projects.
Review HVAC-related aspects of new construction and renovation
projects as assigned.
Respond to building emergencies including occasional nights,
weekends, and university closures.
Assist with snow removal and building related tasks during
periods of inclement weather, ensuring a safe and accessible
environment for all.
Assess issues and repair laboratory fume hoods and specialized
ventilation systems.
Perform tasks related to general construction.
Install new plumbing lines and ductwork
Performs other duties as assigned.

Skills & Experience
- High School with one year of technical training.
- Must possess EPA Section 608 Universal Certification at the
time of hire.
- 4-5 years experience.
- Experience troubleshooting HVAC, refrigeration, electrical, and
control systems.
- Experience with boilers, chillers, cooling towers, building
automation systems, and ventilation equipment.
- Experience reading blueprints, schematics, and construction
drawings.
- Experience in general construction.
- Experience working with refrigeration.
- Ability to independently diagnose equipment failures and
recommend corrective actions.
- Knowledgeable of electrical single phase and 3 phase
power.
- Knowledgeable of EPA regulations and code requirements.
- Ability to participate in small projects and coordinate work
activities.
- Able to select appropriate materials for job
independently.
- Possess basic computer skills.
- Experience with electrical test equipment, refrigeration
gauges, and welding equipment, leak detection equipment,
multimeter, amp meter, psychrometer, flow hood, pipe threading
machine, pipe camera, sewer auger, power tools and hand tools.
- Have a valid driver's license.
- Ability to work well with a diverse population.
- Ability to work well under pressure and make appropriate
decision/judgment call in emergency situations.
- Ability to effectively communicate technical information to
non-technical building occupants.
- Ability to independently prioritize routine work
assignments.
- Ability to share knowledge and expertise with HVAC Mechanic I
coworkers.
