Ultrashort laser pulses can be used to directly write structural modifications inside dielectric materials. This modification can manifest itself in a variety of ways, one example of which can be a localised increase in the refractive index. Using this refractive index modification, it is possible to directly inscribe 3D optical waveguides inside materials [1] – a capability which has considerable potential for developing bespoke sensing technologies. During this PhD project, you will develop ultrafast laser inscribed optical waveguide components for sensing in harsh environments of relevance to AWE. The project will be based within the Photonic Instrumentation Group (phi.eps.hw.ac.uk) at the Heriot Watt campus in Edinburgh but some trips to AWE at Aldermaston will be required for testing. The appointed individual will have the opportunity to gain expertise in areas including optics, instrumentation, and device simulation.
This prestigious 4 year PhD studentship comes with a significantly enhanced stipend and ringfenced budget for travel.
