Key Responsibilities
The Baker Institute for Peace and Conflict Studies at Juniata College in Pennsylvania invites applications for a Postdoctoral Scholar in Residence to start in Fall 2026. This one-year, full-time, non-tenure-track position (with the potential for renewal for a second year based on budget, need, and performance), is ideally suited for a recent Ph.D. graduate in Peace and Conflict Studies, International Conflict Management, International Studies, and International Relations.
The primary responsibilities of this position include teaching two courses in the fall and spring semesters, such as Mediation, Negotiation and Peacebuilding, Nonviolence and Social, Culture and Conflict, and other courses based on expertise. Additionally, the role involves conducting collaborative research with the institute’s director as well as independent research. The Postdoctoral Scholar in Residence is also expected to mentor students’ undergraduate research capstone as a committee member.

The Baker Institute’s mission is to apply the resources of the academic community to the study of warfare and deep-rooted conflict as human problems and to the study of peace as a human potential. The Baker Institute supports a vibrant and engaged community of learners on campus. It institutes curricular and co-curricular courses that ask students and faculty to continuously challenge their thinking about war, peace, and justice. Externally, the Baker Institute fosters partnerships that inspire the mutual growth and development of the field, both within academia and our local and global communities.
Primary Responsibilities
The Postdoctoral Scholar in Residence reports to the Institute’s director and will contribute to the Institute’s academic and research mission by teaching, producing scholarly work, and engaging and mentoring undergraduate students. Through the Residence program, the Baker Institute provides a space for peacebuilders and peace educators to interact and share their experiences with Juniata students.
- Work with the Baker Institute Director and/or other Juniata faculty to engage in peace-related scholarly research.
- Teach two courses in the fall 2026 semester and two courses in the spring 2027 semester.
- Mentor and energize students by teaching and sharing experiential knowledge to assist with research projects.
- Provide at least one campus-wide lecture, training, or workshop.
- Participate in interdisciplinary research activities and collaborations within the institute and beyond.
- Contribute to the intellectual life of the Institute through participation in workshops, seminars, and conferences.
- Adhere to ethical research, teaching, and engagement standards and comply with relevant laws, regulations, and Institute policies.
- Conduct independent research on peace and conflict studies topics, and publish these findings in academic journals.
- Collaborate with faculty and staff to enhance Baker Institute programming.

Position Qualifications
- Ph.D. in Peace and Conflict Studies, Conflict Resolution, International Relations, and International Studies,
- Experience in undergraduate teaching at the college level.
- Strong research agenda focusing on peace, conflict studies, and conflict resolution.
Supervision Required/Given
The position reports to the Director of the Baker Institute
Preferred Qualifications
- A record of published research or strong potential for publication.
- Experience in mediation, negotiation, nonviolence, human rights, humanitarian affairs, international politics, or international peacebuilding efforts.
- Ability to contribute to community engagement and outreach initiatives.
