Postdoctoral research assistant (m/f/d)

To strengthen our team in the division "Biodeterioration and Reference Organisms" in Berlin-Steglitz, starting 01.05.2026, we are looking for a Postdoctoral research assistant (m/f/d) in the field of materials science, biotechnology, microbiology, bioinformatics, life sciences, engineering, or a comparable field.

Temporary contract until 30.09.2028
Full-time / suitable as part-time employment

The Bundesanstalt für Materialforschung und -prüfung (BAM) is a materials research organization in Germany. Our mission is to ensure safety in technology and chemistry. We perform research and testing in materials science, materials engineering and chemistry to improve the safety of products and processes. At BAM we do research that matters. Our work covers a broad array of topics in the focus areas of energy, infrastructure, environment, materials, and chemistry and process engineering.

The project aims to develop a digital twin (DT) for predicting and managing corrosion and microbially influenced corrosion (MIC) in marine environments. It uses AI-supported models, Bayesian data fusion, and real-time sensor data integration.

Your responsibilities include:

  • Development of a digital twin (DT) for predicting and managing corrosion and Microbiologically Influenced Corrosion (MIC) in marine environments
  • Collaboration on the development of a digital twin architecture
  • Collaboration on the creation and application of predictive simulation models
  • Collaboration on the development of data processing and fusion algorithms
  • Collaboration on the virtual modeling of marine structures
  • Conducting and evaluating laboratory and field tests
  • Integration of real-time data
  • Selection of suitable sensors and data format conversion

Your qualifications:

  • Successfully completed university degree (diploma / master's) in materials science, biotechnology, microbiology, bioinformatics, life sciences, engineering, or comparable field with completed doctorate
  • Experience with AI-supported modeling (e.g., Scikit-Learn, TensorFlow, Pandas), ideally combined with knowledge of data visualization or statistical analysis
  • Knowledge of software development (e.g., Python, Matlab, Simapro), especially in combination with experience in developing interfaces to sensor systems or databases
  • Experience with sensor technology and real-time data integration
  • Practical experience in marine environments, ideally supplemented by knowledge of environmental monitoring or marine measurement technology, desirable
  • Knowledge of data management and handling research databases, especially in combination with experience in FAIR data principles or scientific data workflow design, an advantage
  • Handling biological samples and sequencing data would be desirable
  • Willingness to travel internationally and conduct fieldwork
  • Good English skills are required, good German skills are desirable
  • Good communication and information skills, goal-oriented and structured approach to work, initiative / commitment and ability to work independently, ability to work in a team and cooperate with others, as well as conceptual, strategic, and innovative thinking skills
