Job Summary: The University of Texas at Tyler School of Medicine (SOM) Basic Sciences Core Faculty position is a fulltime, non-tenure position. This position requires a history of teaching excellence in medical education and leadership skills to serve as core faculty teaching basic sciences in phases 1, 2 and/or 3. The selected candidate will provide instruction primarily in Physiology across the curriculum and serve as facilitator for small group discussion in case-based learning, problem-based learning, and other small group sessions. In addition, this position will collaborate with clinical and basic science faculty for the development of clinical cases to emphasize basic science curriculum and will participate in the development and review of exams and evaluation of learning outcomes.

Key Responsibilities

Phase 1 Medical Students:

  • Develop the goals, learning objectives, pre-work assignments, pre and post test questions and any supplemental materials for each topic in the Phase 1 sequence.
  • Develop cases for the case-based curriculum.
  • Run large group sessions and facilitate case-based learning sessions 3 mornings per week (M/W/F) during year 1 and 3 mornings/afternoons per week (M/T/Th) during year 2.
  • Participate in clinical correlations and illustrate where there is vertical integration of the basic science materials.
  • Routinely teach and model professionalism and ethics.
  • Other activities may include: Social gatherings, Provide a base of support, Assist students with academic issues, Read students' reflections and provide feedback, Assist with students' Independent Investigative Inquiry questions, Support student scholarship, Attend White Coat Ceremony in the fall.

Phase 2 Medical Students:

  • Provide support, guidance, and mentoring to each student during their clerkships as needed.
  • Develop the goals, learning objectives, pre-work assignments, pre and post test questions and any supplemental materials for each topic in the Phase 2 sequence.
  • Develop cases for the case-based curriculum.
  • Run large group sessions and facilitate small group sessions as needed.
  • Support student scholarship.
  • Review reflections/experiences of students.

Phase 3 Medical Students:

  • Continue to provide a mentoring relationship.
  • Review and edit students' personal statements as requested.
  • Write letter of support for residency application as requested.
  • Support student scholarship.
  • Attend post-Match Party in March and Medical School Graduation in May; and represent the School of Medicine at UT Tyler commencements and other formal events as applicable.

General:

  • Prepare for, attend, and participate in faculty meetings.
  • Work on projects within groups such as OSCE case development; communication skills; write-up, oral case presentation and clinical reasoning; professionalism and ethics; mentoring; feedback and evaluation.
  • Participate in and facilitate academic faculty development sessions and retreats (which occur periodically throughout the year) as needed.

Required Qualifications: A terminal doctoral degree MD/DO or PhD in basic science disciplines, such as or as Physiology, Biomedical Sciences, Biochemistry, or related fields is required. Evidence of flexibility to teach across multiple disciplines, expertise in the use of technology and active learning instruction. Three (3) years of relevant teaching experience in health profession education, and prior experience teaching in a medical school curriculum is highly desirable.

Accompanying Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Competencies: Excellent organizational skills, flexibility, and the ability to multi-task. The ability to interact with both staff and faculty, at all levels, is crucial to this role. The ability to work resourcefully and efficiently in terms of time management, with a high level of professionalism, confidentiality, and autonomy, is also imperative.
